Osteoporosis causes inflammation and painful deterioration of the tissue in the joints. There are several methods other than medication that can help you to deal with the pain of osteoarthritis. Following are some alternative remedies to beat osteoarthritis pain.
Pain relievers may be an everyday staple for those suffering from the pain and debilitation of osteoarthritis. Other supplements may also be used in addition to pain relievers. However, there are a few other things you can do to help ease the pain of osteoarthritis.
Exercise. Although exercise may be the last thing on your mind when you are suffering from joint pain of osteoarthritis, exercise is what you need to help reduce inflammation and pain, and to increase range of motion in aching joints. The best exercises for those with osteoarthritis combine gentle stretching with strength training rather than high impact or aerobic exercises. Yoga, t'ai chi and aquatic exercise are all good methods of exercise when you have osteoarthritis. Speak with your doctor before beginning any exercise program.
Foods. Certain foods can fight pain and inflammation. Cherries, especially tart cherries, berries, celery and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce inflammation from osteoarthritis and to help reduce the associated pain. Seasonings that help fight inflammation and pain include ginger and turmeric. Flax seeds and walnuts also contain omega-3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation and ease symptoms of pain. You should avoid sugar, red meat, shellfish and most vegetable oils as they can cause inflammation and pain.
Weight Loss. Excess weight can play havoc on joints in the knees and back. Losing just a little bit of weight can help to reduce inflammation and pain from pressure of excessive weight on the joints in these areas.
Injections. Injections can consist of steroids or fluid to fill in the space between joints where cartilage has been worn away. Injections should be a resort method before undergoing surgery and should only be given from 2 to 4 times a year to beat osteoarthritis pain.
