Alternative Spring Break Ideas for Teens

Amy Stepp
If you are a teenager then you know that when Spring Break rolls around you have a big right of passage to head to the beach, enjoy the sun, party all night and forget about the books for a little while. However, not every teen wants to party at the beach, or not every teen can afford to head south for the week of fun and if you fall into those two categories then you are stuck with "UGH, WHAT CAN I DO ON SPRING BREAK!" Finding alternatives for Spring Break can get a little tricky, but with some of the ideas I am going to throw at you, you may find rewarding and/or fun.

Volunteering:

Habitat For Humanity

There are many outlets that allow you to put your time and hands into good use. For instance you may want to check out Habitat for Humanity. This organization gathers volunteers to share their time for families in need of decent shelter. Think about it, someone's home in your own town could of suffered from a fire and now a misplaced family is living in a hotel. With your help and the help of Habitat for Humanity you can make a family like this (and others in their situation) happy when you lend your own time to hammer in some nails put up drywall. Not only will this alternative Spring Break idea give you a better self confidence about yourself, it also looks great on college applications! Just head over to www.habitat.org to find out more information you will need to volunteer in your area!

Local Nursing Homes

I know in my own area we are swamped with nursing homes filled with elderly people in need of some companionship. Most of the older faces in the nursing homes do not even have family members to come visit them. They sit in their rooms all day and night, some not able to go outside, some not able to even go out in the social rooms the nursing home may have. Could you imagine spending your days and nights all by yourself with no-one to talk to or even just sit with. I know from seeing my own family in nursing homes, that it can get pretty lonely and it would be a great selfless act on your part to volunteer your time during your Spring Break to spend an hour a day with an elderly person. Who knows, it may give you an idea on what type of career could be good for you to go into once you are threw with high school. All you have to do is go to any number of nursing homes in your area and tell them your Spring Break is coming up. You would like to volunteer an hour a day during that week with visiting elderlies that live in that nursing home. They will give you all the other information you need to start the ball rolling.

Earn Extra Money:

Babysitting

Wouldn't it be nice to earn some extra cash during the week of your Spring Break? Many parents who have little kids have to work during Spring Break and they are in dire need of a babysitter. Some of them will pay a great amount of money to know their kids are in good hands while they are at work. If you already have a babysitting job, just reiterate to the parents you work for that you would love to watch their kids during the Spring Break holiday so they don't have to put them in a high paying daycare service. If you don't have a current babysitting job, or have little experience in babysitting then you will need to get your name out there at least 2 week prior to Spring Break. Create fliers with your name and it and phone number and also put that you will be able to babysit during Spring Break vacation. Pass out these fliers to local churches and through your parents workplace. I am sure you will have multiple calls to help you land one job during that week. Just make sure if this is something that sounds interesting to you, you are sure you are capable of handling children and caring for them because they can be a very stressful job if you are not use to it.

Yard Work

Spring time is the start of people wanting to get their yards into tip top shape. Cutting grass, trimming bushes, and planting flowers is the start to a beautiful yard. However, there are many people (in your town) that are not capable of doing this chore. For example if you know a person in your neighborhood that is older and needs assistance in cutting their grass or cleaning up limbs or anything else to that matter, then offer your assistance to them. Tell them that you wouldn't mind coming over during your Spring Break vacation and cleaning up their yard for a small price. Who knows this may land you a weekly grass cutting job to bring in extra spending cash for you.

Having Fun:

If volunteering or making extra money is just not for you and you just want to have fun this Spring Break then plan some fun outings with your other teen friends to do.

1.Head to the amusement park in your area

2.Have a picnic lunch in a local park

3.Make a day at the water park

If you are more on the lines of spending time by yourself then try:

1.Read a great book

2.Do deep cleaning in your room

3.SLEEP! (MY Favorite Idea)

No matter if you take any of these teen alternative Spring Break ideas or pick one of your own, have fun while you are doing it and enjoy the week off of school!
