Land lines were, for the better part of the previous century, the preferred (and sometimes only) mode of communicating with a television phone. These lines provide you the with the freedom to receive phone calls from the comfort of your own home. And with wireless land line phones available, you can take the calls just about anywhere in your residence.
Cell Phones are slowly making all other forms of telephone service obsolete. Cell phones can be used in the majority of the country as well as throughout the world. In addition you receive free long distance service, which if you make many long distance phone calls, you can end up saving money over what you would spend on your land line number. There are a hand full of cellular providers around the country, with Sprint, Verizon and AT&T being the most used companies.
Although not as common place as they once were, pay phones allow you to make a call from a street corner or a restaurant and everywhere in between. A call may be more expensive from a pay phone than what it use to cost a few years ago, but they still provide service in the middle of nowhere, even when your cell phone has no signal.
Satellite phones are similar to cellular phones, but they can be used in even the most isolated areas in the world. The phones connect through satellites which bounce the calls to the desired number. One of the biggest issues with satellite phones however is that, like satellite television, they will not always function properly when in the rain or heavy cloud cover.
With Skype you can skip the phones all together. Skype is similar to an instant messenger, only if you have a microphone or a web cam hooked up to your computer you will be able to see and talk to the individual you want to contact. Granted you need your computer around, which is not always possible, and you will need your other individual to be on the computer at the same time. But you can see your contacts face and hear their voice, even from the other side of the world, and the best part is you don't have to pay any fees (outside of your typical Internet connection fee).

Post a CommentGreat compromise- cell phones a bit irregular with reception- land lines too expensive. Compromise: VIOP-type unlimited hard phone service (from home) like that offered by Comcast. We got it for $25. a month as part of a package and cut out cell phone use in half - reduced the plan and saved a good deal of money getting more reliable and clearer service at the same time. On the road, the cell phone is still king!
