Fish Oil
One of my friends that has ulcerative colitis told me that she takes fish oil every day to help control her symptoms. I haven't tried this treatment so I can't speak personally for it. However, MayoClinic.com notes this as a possible treatment but states it has yet to be proven.
Acupuncture and Aloe Vera
I have used acupuncture to help my ulcerative colitis symptoms. This works-as long as you don't mind the needles. Personally, I couldn't really deal with the needles on a long term basis so this wasn't a viable treatment for me. While I was on the acupuncture therapy, I took oral doses of aloe vera. Aloe vera is an anti-inflammatory, which explains why it may help to control ulcerative colitis. If you choose to try aloe vera, talk to your doctor about what dosage is appropriate for you.
Stress Control
Stress is a trigger for many ulcerative colitis sufferers. Staying away from stressful situations isn't always possible. Meditating on the Bible is one way that I control my stress. This helps me to remember that God is in control of my life and that I can release all of my concerns to Him. For people who don't read the Bible, other forms of meditation may help.
Exercise
In my case, exercise was the most important treatment for my ulcerative colitis. Yoga, walking and swimming are all exercises that help. It isn't enough, however, to do the exercises only one or two days a week. If you want to feel your best, you have to exercise every day. Many of my friends with ulcerative colitis have noticed the same thing. Exercising helps the body to function optimally. For a person with ulcerative colitis, this helps keep the bowels moving properly, which decreases the risk of a flare up.
Conclusion
If you have ulcerative colitis, seeking alternative treatments is sometimes worth the experimentation, especially if you can find a treatment that works. It is important that you work with your doctor when you try these treatments to ensure that they don't make your condition worse.
