Alternative Uses for Dryer Sheets

Lori Piper
I was cleaning out my garage the other day... something that should be done more than once a year (or so), especially since I am not the most organized when it comes to my garage. The kitchen and pantry I am almost rigid in my organizational skills; my bedroom closet... partially so even though my clothes are sorted by color. The linen closet, well, it is too easy to be organized there. My bookcases are alphabetical by genre. My cupboards are also user friendly.

My garage... where my washer and dryer are, is a mess. It is where all things get tossed or put up in the wrong place on the wrong shelf.

So this past weekend I tackled it. Only took the entire weekend. One of the things I discovered whilst organizing is that I had four boxes of dryer sheets. There must have been a sale.

So my phone tree with my friends began... anyone need any dryer sheets? That began the discussion about what other uses they may have.

Alternative uses for dryer sheets- four eyes

Ever notice that sometimes the world is not as clear as it could be? Maybe it appears a bit dusty? This is most noticeable if one wears spectacles. I am now going to keep some in a small Ziploc baggie in my purse-should they become dusty I can simply whisk one out and clean my glasses. After all, I work in a book store, where dust can accumulate tenfold.

Alternative uses for dryer sheets- dog days

You know what carries a distinctive smell... dog. Yep... we can spend hours cleaning the home for when adopters are coming over ( for our rescued Persian beauties) and although the house is sparkling and clean... at times, all the notice is on the dogs as they come to greet the potentials adopters into their home. This is most noticeable after they have been outside in the rain... which they love. What to do, the adopters will be arriving any moment? Take out a dryer sheet or two and rub their fur down. The sheets will absorb the bad odor, leaving behind a fresh scent.

Alternative uses for dryer sheets- my aching feet

Some days my feet hurt. I come home and all I want is to prop them up and not move until morning. Alas, my home life does best when I am mobile. What to do? My friend suggested that I place two sheets in a pan of warm water and soak my feet for ten minutes (while on the phone with her, of course). After the ten minutes, use the sheets as a buffer on your heels.

Alternative uses for dryer sheets- grime buster

Have you ever looked at your oven racks? They can become so caked with grease and grime from meals we have cooked for our families... What can we do about that? I do not use oven cleaner. I simply do not like the smell. Instead, another friend recommends that I place four sheets in the bathtub, set the racks on top and then fill the tub with warm water. She further recommended leaving them to soak overnight; ensuring that the grime and grease will wipe right off in the morning.

I am going to try these suggestions. What about you? Any suggestions? I have four boxes!!!!

I had no idea dryer sheets were so useful! I need to try that oven rack idea. Thanks!

Some definite alternative uses here. I might have to try the overnight oven rack in the bathtub one. You might also try using a dryer sheet and lightly rubbing the top of your head whenever having a very bad static "fly away" hair day. It works on my long hair especially when static is worse from wearing a sweater in winter. (^;^)

I use dryer sheets to press flowers in the pages of a book. It keeps the book clean, and seems to preserve the colors of the flowers. This is great for daffodils of all things!

Great ideas! I have two more for you: 1. I use dryer sheets on my tv. It keeps the dust down 2.I also keep some in my car. Every once in a while the static gets bad in the car, so I will wipe the seats down with dryer sheets to discharge the static.

Good ideas, my glasses are always dusty so I'm gonna follow your lead.

If you have the right sort of vacuum you can put one over the air outlet and it will dispense a nice smell throughout the area you are vacuuming. (Loosely with a rubber band.)
