Alternative Uses for Salt

Salt Does Not Always Have to Be Bad for Us

Lori Piper
Okay, we all know that too much salt is bad for us. But what is while organizing the pantry, one stumbles upon two more large containers of salt in addition to the one already in use?

Right now with so many of us concerned with finances, me included, saving money is the optimal choice. Yes, the salt was purchased on sale, and salt is so inexpensive to bring with... is it really worth saving?

You betcha!

Alternative uses for salt- winter days

My sister resides in Maine. Do you know they just received another twenty four inches of snow? My niece and nephew are so tired of all the white... so they tell me. After dialoguing with my sister, I think what they are really tired of is all the snow related chores. Every morning the two of them are supposed to de-ice or de-snow the windshield before my sister drives them to school. Most days they forget and by the time all is said and done, one or both of them is late for school. Solution... I am going to send her one of my extra salt containers. Spritzing a salt and water based solution on the windshield the night before can alleviate the accumulation of snow, ice and frost on the windshield in the morning. The salt provides a coating on the glass acting as a preventive to condensation build up. They will be so glad that I am thinking of them when they see the package arrive in the mail next week.

Alternative uses for salt- caffeine is our friend

I do not know about you, but I cannot function without my morning coffee. All right that is a lie... but it does allow me to be more pleasant and accomplish tasks in a timely fashion. However, sometimes in my rush to have my morning cup of Joe, I have inadvertently used too much coffee, thusly, my morning bliss is bitter. Not good for me... or anyone I might come into contact with such as my family and my co workers.

I can simply add a pinch of salt to my brew; the salt granules balance the acidity in the coffee... thusly...the bitterness is gone and life resumes on an even keel.

Alternative uses for salt- soft as a baby's bottom... maybe

My sister has complained that since moving to Maine, she has noticed that her skin has become drier. With that same container of salt I am sending her way, she can use it to moisturize her skin. By combining one tablespoon of salt with two tablespoons of olive oil she can have her own exfoliater without a high price. The salt and oil work together to polish away the dead abrasive skin cells for a fresh dewy glow. Come to think of it, I also have an extra bottle of olive oil that I will send all with the salt. (Sam's Club had a two for one deal.)

Alternative uses for salt- easy clean up

Since I am sending the extra salt to my sister, another alternative suggestion I am going to include in the "directions" portion of letter is that salt is an oven stain zapper. Sprinkling a few spoonfuls of salt onto the oven spill and leaving for thirty minutes, the spill and odor can be easily removed. The kids will be thankful with this one as they are always cooking up something in the oven... and not cleaning up their mess without being reminded... gently yet firmly.

She is so going to love this care package. So are the kids.
