Alternative Uses for Shower Curtain Rings

A shower curtain ring is a small plastic, metal, or wood part that you use to connect your shower or window curtain to the rod where it hangs. There are other uses for these curtain rings besides the obvious. They are pretty cheap (you may be able to find them at a dollar store) and come several to a pack, so keep a few packages handy in a kitchen or bedroom drawer.

Hold Cabinets Closed

If you have a double cabinet door in your kitchen or bathroom that won't stay closed, or you just want to prevent a child from opening the door easily, use a shower curtain ring to hold the door closed. Simply close the doors, hook the ring through both handles and snap it closed. Move the ring to the top of the handles and rest it there to help keep it out of the reach of children.

Hold Back Curtains

Shower curtain rings are commonly used on the rod, but you can also use them hold back the curtains if you want to let some light into your home. Just gather the middle of the curtain material inside of your fist, hook the curtain ring around it, and snap it closed. Pull the ring up the curtain to let more light in.

Napkin Holder

If you like to hold dinner parties or formal dinners frequently, try to find ornate wood or metal shower curtain rings to use as napkin holders. Stick a (clean) finger in the middle of the napkin and allow it to hang over your hand. Then place the closed curtain ring over your finger and pull the napkin up while pushing the ring down so that it sits near the center of the cloth. When you lay the napkin on the plate, place the side that snaps together down so that it's hidden.

Clothes Hanger Space Saver

You can also use a shower curtain ring to create your own makeshift space saving clothes hanger system. Place a piece of clothing on a hanger then run a closed shower curtain ring over the hanger hook. Place another piece of clothing on another hanger as well as another ring over the hook, then hook that hanger to the previous ring. Continue this process one or two more times. The clothing will use up more vertical space in the closet instead of taking up space on the rod.
