Alternatives to House Plants

Options for Individuals Who Don't Have a Green Thumb

Dee Dee Smith
Over the years I've found a few plants that I'm good with, but I'm not like some other individuals who have a "green thumb" and are great with any and every plant. It's unfortunate however because I truly appreciate a home with many healthy, green plants.

Like me, many individuals do not do well with indoor plants. If you want the "organic feel" that household plants provide, but are a brown thumb gardener (that is you have trouble keeping plants green and healthy), consider some of the following options.

Non-Traditional Indoor Rock Garden - Stack and arrange an assortment of rocks together in a decorative pot to form an indoor rock display. Consider working with themes such as beach (add sand and sea shells to garden) or rustic (add wood chips and moss for that woodsy feel). Other special touches to consider incorporating in your garden include glass rock, tree branches or even a water feature. In addition to decorative pots, explore other containers such as pie plates, clear vases, pottery bowls or serving trays.

Indoor Water Garden - Water gardens are much easier to maintain than standard house plants. All you need to start your indoor water garden is a glass container, gravel and several plants that can thrive underwater. Consult with a professional at an aquarium/fish store to help you choose plants that are right for you and your environment. Although underwater plants may be easier to maintain, they will require some care.

Indoor Water Falls - Water fountains/falls have become extremely popular in home decor. These items can be found at almost any department store or fine furniture gallery, and can be as simple or as elaborate as the homeowner desires. Choose a water fall that compliments your home decor and is the proper scale or size for the space in which you plan to keep it.

Organic Art - Bring the outdoors inside of your home with art or photography. Choose photographs of nature such as lakes, trees or even sunsets or sunrises. Arrange natural items like bamboo, weathered wood and pine cones in tall vases. Make naturalistic wreaths with a combination of twigs, pinecones and dried flowers, or your own custom art by displaying items from outdoors in a frame. Some suggestions include pressed flowers, leaves or feathers.

For more touches of organic home design, consider adding other items to your decor such as clay pottery, wicker baskets, fresh flowers or large bowls of fruit.

I love these ideas. Thankfully, I have a green thumb. I grew up in a floral shop/greenhouse. If I didn't my grandfather and grandmother would be rolling over in their graves.

No green thumbs for me either... but now I am encouraged to see these fantastic alternatives!
