Alternatives to Throwing Rice or Birdseeds at Wedding Receptions

Susie Lee
It only makes sense that your guests want to do something festive to send you off on your honeymoon after your reception. However, many reception centers and parks are banning the traditional rice or birdseed that is usually thrown at the couple. Although it is a myth that rice is not good for birds it can still be very messy and can cause injuries when thrown hard. There are many other ideas that are just as exciting as well as safe and clean.

Many brides are choosing bubbles. They are safe, fun and there is absolutely no clean up. There are many cutesy types of bottles of bubbles available specifically for this purpose. Keep in mind that wedding branded bubbles are usually very cheap but also not very high quality. The wands break easily. The bubble solution is weak and can be very frustrating especially for children. Small traditional bottle of bubbles are also inexpensive but work much better. Try to find clear bottles and then make customized wrappers for them with your initials and wedding date printed on the front. These can just be taped on. Another idea is to provide your guests with the little bubble guns that blow bubbles by pressing a trigger. These aren't as elegant but the children will love them. Look for these at novelty or dollar stores in the summer.

Rose petals aren't just for flower girls. Give all of your guests a pretty little bag of rose petals to throw as you leave. Keep in mind that some reception centers may ban these as well because they do require clean up. Ask your coordinator first to avoid any penalty fees. Make sure you brush all the petals off your dress before getting into the car. Rose petals can stain when they are crushed. Try white petals if you are worried.

Sparklers are very festive and don't require cleanup. There may be restrictions so check with your coordinator about these as well. Many reception centers will let you use these as long as your guests stay a few feet away from the building. Fill a rectangular basket or container with the sparklers that can be passed out and then assign your groomsmen to help guests light them before you exit.

Many large cities have places where you can get live butterflies to be released. This can make a very special photo opportunity. Make sure to have someone keep the butterflies safe until they are ready to be released.

If you don't want anything thrown at you at all try noisemakers. Have your guests pass around a basket of horns, bells and whistles so they can make lots of noise as you leave.

Regardless of what you end up choosing make sure someone is in charge of organizing your guests so they know where to stand and what to do. It would be tragic if after all the preparation they were waiting at the wrong door or at the wrong time.
