Make an Altoids Mint Tin Gift Card Holder

Marie M. Daniels
I am going to show you how to make a gift card holder out of an Altoids mint tin. The Altoids gift card holder can be used for giving gift cards on birthday's or at Christmas time. There are all kinds of other crafts you can make with old Altoids tins. If you eat the Altoids mints then you can collect your left over tins and turn them into a craft, a gift or a decoration. Crafters have been using the Altoid mint tins to come up with some pretty amazing looking crafts.

While you are making your gift cardholder you are also recycling. You will be helping out the planet and will save your self some money at the same time with this mint tin craft.

Items needed to make an Altoids Christmas or Birthday Gift Card Holder:

You will need an empty Altoids mint tin for this gift card box craft. Other items needed are: glue, tape, tissue paper, a gift card, card stock paper, and pictures. Some optional items you may want to use include: ribbons, spray paint, buttons, beads, stickers, glitter or other decoration extras.

To make the Altoids tin Christmas gift card holder craft you will need an empty Altoids mint tin. You may want to wash and dry the mint tin so that the gift card will not smell like the curiously strong mints. I for one like the smell of peppermint so I did not wash the smell out. For the inside where the gift card will go, first place some tissue paper in the deeper side of the mint tin. The tissue paper is a decoration but it is also used to hold the card at an angle for better access for the gift recipient.

For the inside of the tin I found some Christmas clip art of a Christmas tree and added the names of friends who will receive the Altoids gift card holder. You just make the card stock fit to the inside of the tin lid and tape it so it will stay put. You could find a birthday cake clip art picture to use if the gift card box is for a birthday present.

For the outside of the Altoids tin gift card holder craft you can get creative and crafty or just keep it simple. The top of the Altoids tin lid should be covered, for this homemade gift card holder. If you don't cover the lid you will see the Altoids name. Now if you want to play a little Christmas or Birthday joke you can leave the name uncovered so they think they only got a tin full of mints.

There are several ways to cover the lid for this craft. You can paint over the Altoids name with spray paint. You could get more clip art or a picture and decoupage it to the top of the Altoids tin lid. You could wrap the Altoids tin gift card holder lid just like a present complete with a bow. You could also cover the lid with just about any little crafting thing such as buttons, bows, stickers, etc.

Scrapbooking supplies can be added to decorate any part of the homemade gift card tin you would like. There are so many crafty things to do with Altoids tins you could find a homemade gift to make for everyone in your family.

I have been 'saving' Altoid (those 'curiously strong' mints) tins for years. Now I have something to do with them!
