Bar Ann Drive-in, Portage, PA: Located near Blue Knob Ski Resort, this theater opened in 1954. It features one screen with FM stereo sound. Open from May to September, Bar Ann features nightly double features and a full concession stand. The theater's location in the mountains of PA make for beautiful scenery as the sun sets behind the screen and plays off the mountains in the distance. The staff is exceptionally friendly and makes you feel welcome.
Rates: $6.00 per adult (11 & up), $2.00 per child (6-10), under 6 admitted free
Hiway Drive-in, Carroltown, PA: Located along route 219 in Carroltown, this drive-in is easily accessed from Altoona, though it is roughly the same distance as Bar Ann. It features one screen with a 500 car capacity and FM stereo sound. It offers double features nightly from April through September.
Rates: $6.00 per adult (11 & up), $2.00 per child (6-10), under 6 admitted free
Silver Drive-in, Johnstown, PA: Johnstown is about 35 miles from Altoona, making this the furthest theater of the three, but choosing this theater gives the movie-goer a few additional options. While the first two theaters are fairly remote and centered in residential areas, this theater is located within miles of downtown Johnstown's business district. You will have many options for shopping and dining close by before the show. Reopened in 2005, this facility offers a more modern concession area, filled with artwork and memorabilia. The drive-in features one screen with a 400 car capacity and operates annually from May-October.
Rates: $6.00 per adult (12 & up), $4.00 per child (4-11), 3 and under admitted free
If you live in the Altoona area and are looking for a night at the movies, consider the drive-in. While you will not see a movie premiere at the drive-in, all three theaters attract first run movies and begin showing them just a few weeks beyond the release date. My personal favorite is Bar Ann due to its proximity to me and its reasonable pricing, but you really cannot go wrong with either choice. Your family will enjoy the show and the experience (and the popcorn!).
