Alvarado St. Bakery says there are lots of health benefits to eating already sprouted grain, too. Since it's already sprouted, your body more easily digests and uses the nutrients found in the organic grains. Sprouted organic grains are used in all of its breads, not just its California Style Complete Protein Bread. Too, the combination of sprouted organic whole wheat berries, sprouted organic soy beans, and sprouted lentils is what leads Alvarado St. Bakery to label it as complete protein bread.
Buyer beware, though. Because the organic grains have sprouted already, and no preservatives are used, save the sea salt in it, the shelf life for all of Alvarado St. Bakery breads is a bit shorter than most all other breads. However, by the same token, the already sprouted organic grains makes for a much better freezing bread than most all other breads. Also, you certainly should follow the word of advice on the packaging to refrigerate after purchasing. Notice it doesn't say refrigerate after opening, but refrigerate after purchasing. First hand experience backs that up, too. I wasn't aware of the need to refrigerate this flour-less bread, until writing this review. The first loaf I bought went south in about three or four days. And I'm really ticky about wasting food. Though, I don't get so ticked-off and obsessive about it that I forget bugs and other creations eat wasted food, too. All the same, as I pen this review the second loaf of Alvarado St. Bakery bread now sits in the refrigerator.
Alvarado St. Bakery California Style Complete Protein Bread, made with organic grains, is a hearty textured and tasting oblong-shaped loaf of pan baked bread. It certainly has a different feel to the touch than any other bread I've had. It toasts just fine and makes a great un-toasted sandwich bread. Oh... and the taste is plenty good. The one knock I have against the bread is it doesn't use organic soy lecithin.
If you haven't heard of, or tried, Alvarado St. Bakery California Style Complete Protein Bread (100% Whole Grain), you can buy it online direct from Alvarado St. Bakery. You can find it in many health food and large chain grocery stores, too. This loaf reviewed was bought at a ShopRite clear across the country from where it's made, near San Francisco, California, and was cheaper than some non-organic breads sold at the same store.
