Alyssa Bernal: Talented? or Just Another Annoying Pop Star?

Maggie Blake
You may not have heard of Alyssa Bernal yet, but chances are you will know who she is before long. Alyssa Bernal is a twenty-one year old singer from Texas, who was discovered on YouTube. She has one album completed, and is set to tour with the band LifeHouse. Alyssa is the next in a growing line of young musicians who have been offered contracts due, in part, to their self-posted videos on YouTube featuring themselves singing. Much like Justin Bieber, and Greyson Chance, Alyssa Bernal will soon be known the world over, due to her humble beginnings on YouTube.

But is Alyssa Bernal really all that talented? And if she is very talented, will the music that she does now that she is under contract be worse than the music she performed on YouTube? After all, Justin Bieber has been forced to put out some pretty stupid songs since getting signed; whereas before when he was simply a YouTube phenomenon, he seemed far more talented than he is portrayed to be in his professional music career. At least, so far. So will it be the same story with Alyssa Bernal?

If her current songs are any sign of music to come, then it seems safe to say that Alyssa Bernal will not be just another young musician pulled off of YouTube, and subsequently forced to produce annoying music for the world to endure. Don't get me wrong, I've been watching Justin Bieber on YouTube with my kids since long before he became a household name, and we really like him. It's just that his talent was always so evident in those unpretentious home videos on YouTube, and now the music he's putting out has even my 9 year old daughter grabbing her ears and ducking for cover. If she has to hear "Baby, Baby, Baby" while walking through Target one more time, I'm going to be forced to find a new place to buy laundry detergent.

The songs currently available from Alyssa Bernal, on the other hand, are highly tolerable, and dare I say, even enjoyable. So it would seem apparent that she will not be just another YouTube sensation turned pop star who produces music that has everyone wondering what the heck her record label was thinking. Also encouraging, is that Alyssa Bernal's lyrics are clean enough for even preteen ears, which is music to my ears when it comes to dealing with my daughter's current adoration of Miley Cyrus, whose content is quickly becoming too racy for little Hannah Montana groupies.
