Am I Losing My Parenthood?

Catdog
You're taller than me,
What am I to do and how?
You've become a teen,
What does this mean?
You're leaving my side,

Too big for me to hold?
Say you're gettin' too old.
Can't kiss you on the cheek?
The guys'll call you a geek.
"Mom, don't be sly and even try!"
Runs away, yells, "good-bye!"

First you shun from my protection.
Saying, "I got it now."
Then you shoo away my affection.
My motherhood? (POW!)

I drive away from you today,
Speechless and Surprise.
I lost my baby boy this day.
Tears flood my eyes.

Only before, I'd thought I'd been alone,
Being a mother, all I ever knew.
A wrenching soulful cry; I do moan.
I haven't a clue what to do?!

Then you walk in from school,
"Guess what happened today?"
Oh! He's done being cool,
To me, he chose to say,

"Well Billy shot a pea out his nose,
And it landed on Sally's dress."
"Quick to her defense, I arose,"
"Yelled, "That was mean!" and "what a mess!""

"Oh! Karen's a new girl at school,
She's from Germany."
"Amazingly, she's cool, too!"
"And I think she likes me!"

"Well, mom, it's been nice, but it's study hour."
"I'll grab my books and stuff."
"New knowledge awaits my devour,
Must get it before it's tough."

He stands up, right beside me.
Tells me, "Today you look nice."
Gives me a pat to my knee,
Kisses my cheek- Twice!

"Oh! Hold up there boy!", grabbing him tight!
"I think it's time you took your bow."
"I must've taught you wrong and right."
"Today you've proven you're a man now."

As he heads up the stairs,
I smiled the grandest smile.
MOTHER- I am! He still cares!
It's just another new mile!

I look forward to every new adventure along the road son!

Everytime i start to read your work i think this is just something she threw together only to be found a million times over, to be wrong each and ever time. You are reaching deep into your heart and showing your emotional side as all good poets do. a wonderful job you are doing I am so very proud of you. Your son ..... yes he is a teenager, with each day he will drift further away from the nest, but unlike with other animals, he will never stray so far, that being the good son he is, that he will forget his nest and upbringing. He is yours till the end of time, nothing will ever change that. Good Job Miss "CD" ken

Beautiful piece! I relate to it. My son, Jack, is 21 and we are best friends, despite the distance. He's in Hollywood--my husband and I left Hollywood seven months ago and miss Jack terribly. But we chat on the phone almost daily. And I can sense how much he's grown. And how independent he is. He's man enough to be friends with his mom (and dad), which is the message your beautiful poem sends to me!

Where does the time go? My daughter is 30 now and married. She lives far from me so I don't get to see her much. My heart aches but what can you do? Once day they are just all grown up with their own life. I guess I was the same way but never realized then how lonely my Mom must have been without us kids. The good thing is - there is always love between Mom and child no matter what.
