Am I that Much Darker?

The Struggles of Being Black in America

Brandy Williams
Am I that much darker?
Does something seem strange about me?
Do you know where I have been?
Do you see the things that I see?
Can I have 'different' friends?
Would you let me in?
Can I have a new face?
Why am I the disgrace?
Have things really changed?
Are times so far progressed?
Have my actions led you to your conclusions?
Or are you simply distressed....because I am me?
Am I that much darker?

Why do you clutch your bag?
Do I look threatening?
Are you following me to help?
Or making sure I am not helping myself?
Do all of your customers get this kind of personal service?
Why do you jump to the other sidewalk?
You know, when you see me coming through?
Do you think I am that scary?
Do you think I am out to get you?
Am I that much darker?

Do you see the ills of the world in me?
Do you think I am the problems of your destiny?
Should I stop where I am and just die?
Would that make you smile or cry?
Would you care at all?
Do you think I am infinitely small?
Have you ever really noticed me?
Have you ever listened as I speak?
Should you?
Am I that much darker?
