Foods that fight fat fall into a few different categories. The first category of fat-fighters that I am going to discuss are thermogenic foods. The term thermogenic refers to the production of heat caused by these foods in the body, with the result of burning fat.
A few of the foods that create a thermogenic effect in the body are cayenne pepper (which also decreases the amount of fat in the arteries), salsa, hot peppers, chili sauce, mustard, red or white wine vinegar, and grapefruit. These all have a fat burning effect on your metabolism.
The second group of fat fighting foods are those that require more energy to be digested and metabolize than they contain. The list of these fat-fighting foods includes berries, cabbage, apples, buckwheat, carrots, chicken, steak (lean), corn, figs, greens, kiwi, oats, lettuce, onions, whole grain breads, tomatoes, tofu, apples, apricots, artichokes, asparagus, chives, cod, crab, cucumbers, eggplant, flounder, green beans, grapes, lemons, limes, pineapple, oranges, tangerines, and red cabbage. You will notice that many of these foods are very high in fiber. Most fiber is not used by the body, and is turned into roughage. This helps to maintain a feeling of fullness, as well as aid in your digestive health.
The third, and I believe, most important group of fat fighting foods are those that have a direct effect on fat and cholesterol, as well as your metabolism. I call these the super-fat-fighters.
Grapefruit, in addition to causing a thermogenic effect when it is metabolized, helps in dissolving cholesterol and fat. The pectin in fat-fighting grapefruit also helps make sure that you feel full. Check with your physician before adding grapefruit to your diet because it can interfere with certain medications used to lower cholesterol.
Fatty fish increases the rate of metabolism in the body, as well as serves to increase energy levels. Fatty fish includes tuna, salmon, and mackerel.
Oatmeal is a super-fat-fighting-food because not only does it burn fat during digestion, but lowers cholesterol. Oatmeal also expands inside your body which helps you to feel full for longer periods of time after its consumption.
Remember to always check with your physician before starting any diet. Also of great importance to achieving the maximum fat-fighting potential of these foods is exercise, in addition to portion control.
