Amazing Race All-stars: Rob and Amber Shockingly Eliminated

Rob and Amber: The Team to Beat

Marsha J
The fourth episode of Amazing Race All-stars ended with the shocking elimination of the team to beat, Rob and Amber who were affectionately titled Romber. Rob and Amber started out with their usually tricks and selfishness and a lot of Amazing Race fans were upset to see that they were invited to come back to Amazing Race. What these fans forgot is that, at the end of the day a television show wants ratings and as much as people seem to hate Rob and Amber, they always elicit some kind of response good or bad.

Not surprisingly Rob and Amber ended three legs of Amazing Race in first place so it was very hard to believe that the very next week they came in last and were eliminated. The one problem with Amazing Race that has made some fans mad over the years is that a lot of their challenges leave things up to fate. In season six of Amazing Race a strong female team was eliminated because they literally could not find a clue in the middle of large bails of haystacks. It turns out that they picked a really bad time to discover hay fever.

That is pretty much the same thing that happened to Rob and Amber since they could not quickly find one of two pieces of mail with their names on it. The small letters were in the middle of bags packed with mail.

The episode began simply enough, Rob and Amber got on one of the first flights to Punta Arena, Chile and proceeded to a shipwreck with directions that a flight attendant gave to them. It turns out that the attendant was supposed to give the directions to Uchenna and Joyce but made a mistake. A mistake that Rob and Amber of course took advantage of. Uchenna was not happy about the directions mix-up.

Regardless of the fact that Rob had to search through tons of mail to find his one letter, what really cost Romber the race were bad choices. At the Detour, teams had a choice between Sign It or Navigate It. For Sign It, teams had to grab a pole and building supplies and take them up a long flight of stairs to a map. Teams had to read the map and discover that Magellan took a journey that went around the world that began and ended in Seville.

Teams had to write on 14 posts, all the ports that Magellan stopped at and although it did not matter which way the signs were facing, all the port names had to be spelled correctly. Rob wrote down all the port names and took it to get verified. The verifier repeatedly turned down Rob and Amber and they kept trying to get the names right. The problem was, they did have the correct names in the correct order but Rob misspelled Philippines when he spelled it "Phillipines".

Rob and Amber did not discover this mistake and they kept trying to get the detour right. Amber kept begging Rob to quit Sign it and do the other challenge Navigate It. Rob wanted to stay on Sign It and both team members began to get frustrated. After a long while Rob finally gave up and switched to the other task. This delay is what cost them the race.

In the end Oswald and Danny came in first place followed by Eric and Danielle, Teri and Ian, Joe and Bill, Dustin and Kandice, Uchenna and Joyce and finally Charla and Mirna. A quick look at the CBS website shows behind the scenes video and one video shows the previously eliminated members completely shocked that Rob and Amber were eliminated. Whether you like Romber or not, the fact still remains that it was stunning to see such a strong team and reality show veterans get eliminated so quickly.

  • Rob and Amber stumbled at the Detour.
  • Rob could not find his piece of mail quickly enough.
  • Rob made the wrong decision not to change detour challenges.
Rob and Amber met on Survivor: All-Stars and at the end Rob proposed to Amber. Some people believed that Rob did it just because he wanted some of Ambers money if she won. If Rob only wanted the money, this couple would not still be together.

Once I saw they'd lost, I started watching the show again. I hate them, won't watch anything they're in.
