Amazon Kindle 2 - an E-Reader Review

Walter Kovacs
The Kindle 2 from Amazon is a small machine onto which you can purchase and download books. Although the Kindle is electronic, it is easy to get used to because of its non-reflective screen. The screen is not backlit, which means you might not get tired from reading it like you would a computer monitor. Its layout is set up well. It has keys below the screen. These keys are for typing notes in books, surfing the web, and navigating throughout books by search. The next page and pervious page buttons don't really make much sense though. There is a large next page button on both sides, and a small previous page button on the right side above the next page button. I believe it would make more sense if the button on the left was the previous page button, and the button on the right was a next page button.

Amazon's Kindle Store is also remarkable. It has over 350,000 books to date, and they add more every day. If a book costs more than $9.99 in print, it will cost exactly $9.99 in the Kindle Store. If a book is less than $9.99 in print, it will cost even less on Kindle. There is not a single book in Kindle Store that costs more on Kindle than it does in print.

Kindle adds books to their repertoire that they know you want. If you go on Amazon.com and search for a book that is in print, but not yet on Kindle, you can click a link on that page to ask Amazon to put that book on Kindle. This helps them choose which books they will add to their ever-expanding library.

Though the Kindle 2 costs $300, it will eventually pay for itself. Because the books cost less, eventually the savings will add up to the cost of the device.

When I first took the device out of its packaging, I thought there was a protective layer on the screen, because it looked like there was something literally written on the screen. I was very excited when it changed. It looks like there are actually words written on the screen!

This device is a good investment if you like to read. If not, it won't be worth it to you. I love my Kindle, and I hope you do too.
