Amazon Kindle: The Power to Publish Your Own Book

Amazon Kindle Store Allows Anyone to Publish a Book

Will Stape
How long have you been writing that great American novel? Dying to share your homespun wisdom on gardening or favorite pastry recipes with the world? Well, march your browser clicking fingers over to the Kindle store at Amazon.com. Within a few short weeks - perhaps days - you can do what I did, publish my own book, and make it available to anyone for download.

I won a Kindle in an essay contest. By the first week, I was hooked by the powerful simplicity of using this advanced electronic reading device. Amazon's Kindle is, if anything, supremely easy to use. A scant instruction manual is included, but I barely browsed it. Once turned on, a Kindle experience is as intuitive as reading a traditional leather bound book, or skimming pages of a favored paperback.

The first night of using my Kindle, I downloaded 30 books - public domain freebies - classics like Dracula, Treasure Island or A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The deeper I went into Kindle, the more I saw how quick and money saving e-books are. Sure, you're not getting a big fat book, but you also don't pay shipping costs. You don't wait days for it to be delivered, nor sacrifice bookshelf or desk space. Kindle can't replace real books, just as a glossy print can't replace an original oil painting, but the reading experience can be wholly satisfying, and it's often speedier thanks to overall digital logistics.

As I browsed thousands of Kindle book titles, I saw mention of Amazon's Digital Text Platform - a service whereby your book can be published and made available on Amazon for purchase. I thought, "It's that easy?"

I'm here to tell you, yes, it can be that easy. It was for me. I submitted my e-book "Star Trek Essays" on Friday morning, and it was accepted and published by Sunday morning. Within two days, I went from wondering if this self publishing Kindle thing actually works, to seeing my e-book published on the most visited book seller on planet Earth.

Go check out Amazon's Digital Text Platform, and see if it's right for you own publishing needs. No matter the ultimate outcome with my first published e-book, the process couldn't have been easier.

"jinkies" Will, if I'd known it was that easy to get published I would have submitted my own "Bug Mugg's Biography" book a bug's age ago...
