Amazon's Kindle: Can You Fall in Love with This Latest Greatest?

Amazon's Amazing Reading Device

Amazon's Kindle: Changing the Way We Read

Times are changing. We, as a society, no longer use the newspaper as our main source of information. Gone are the days when we neatly composed handwritten letters to keep in touch with acquaintances while we vacation at the seashore. Instead, we blog and text and friend each other on a variety of websites. We do our Christmas shopping, at least some of us, online. We even buy our music online. So why should our pastime of reading books remain unchanged?

We are, in some respects, a little more reluctant to usher in a change regarding our book reading habits. Whether due to the emotional attachments formed while snuggling up with a good book on a rainy day or our reticence to let technology claim yet another area of our lives, it is unclear. Make no mistake, though, times are changing, or should I say, have already changed. Amazon's Kindle, has ushered in a new way of reading, where you buy and read your books on an electronic device.

You may be one of the reluctant ones to change, but as with most forms of technology, we look back years later in amazement at how far we've come. We will be shocked to think we actually had to go to a brick and mortar store to purchase a book and that our other option was to wait for it to be mailed to us. We will be astounded that we only had access to a handful of paperbacks in our beach bag and that we had to plan ahead of time to have those few to read on our vacation, unless of course we happened to have access to a good bookstore at the beach.

So, the question is...can you fall in love with the Kindle? Well, read on to see. With the Amazon Kindle you can have the best of both worlds: the satisfaction of a good book at your fingertips along with the convenience of many more options.

The Kindle: Versatility at your fingertips

One of the benefits of the Kindle, according to Amazon's website, is the ability to change the font size of the books you purchase. Every book can instantly be changed into a large-type edition, a plus for certain segments of the population. Not to mention you have access to over 350,000 books that you can have delivered on your Kindle in about 60 seconds, no PC required. Sound too good to be true? There's more, my friend. Many New York Times Bestsellers and New Releases can be purchased for $9.99, typically less than you would pay in a bookstore.

Yes, you may be thinking, perhaps I could fall in love with a Kindle. Well, if you think you could fall in love with this latest greatest, the 6" Kindle can be purchased for $299 at Amazon.com. Their website has the following descriptions of their latest Kindle: Slim, just over 1/3 of an inch; Lightweight, at 10.2 ounces the Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback; Wireless: 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle, anytime, anywhere; no monthly fees, service plans, or hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots; Paper-like Display, boasting 16 shades of gray for clear text and even crisper images. The Kindle will also allow you to download and read first chapters for free before you decide to purchase a book. With the Kindle, you have access to U.S. and international newspapers, magazines and blogs.

If you are one of those who can forego the pleasure of the feel of a book in your hand, the Kindle may be ideal for you. In fact, it may be just what you've needed, but didn't know existed.

For $29.99 you can add a leather book cover for your Kindle and for $65.00, you can add a 2-year Extended Warranty for your Kindle. The average customer review out of 6,187 reviews on Amazon's website is four out of five stars. The 9.7" Kindle DX is a little bit larger, at 9.7", and is listed on Amazon's website for $489.

This is a great review. I've been wondering if these are 'worth it' or not. Thanks for the information.

My cousin has a Kindle. She loves it when travelling, especially by plane.

I saw this on oprah and want one badly! Won't pay for it though!!

Great review!! As much as I like the feel of a book in my hands, I really want one. Think how great it would be for a college student if they could get all of their text books on the kindle, and not have to lug around books anymore! The only downfall I can see is that you can't pass on good books you've read to family and friends, like you can do with a paperback...and I also wonder what kind of battery life it has.

I love books so much I didn't think I would like a Kindle..but..I do. :) I like both. I love the size of my Kindle..and how I can have so much to read in that one little device that goes with me..just tuck it in my purse and I'm off. :) At home, though, still love to curl up with a real book.

I have a hard time reading on the computer, especially is it's school materials. But the hippie in me says it's great because no more toll will be taken on the earth in terms of trees and chemicals. But until the price comes down, it's moot for me.

Very interesting. I don't know if I'd like that or not.
