Ambulance Service in Van Buren County, Arkansas

This is just a quick thought a memory about the ambulance service from Van Buren County, Arkansas back in the late 1980's. I happened to read a piece on the KATV Channel 7 ABC website about Woodruff county in Arkansas and it brought to mind, what what happened when my father-in-law needed an ambulance back many years ago. I think it was 1986 or 1987; however it could have been 1988. He didn't have a phone, so I walked across the highway to the Farmer's Cooperative store in Bee Branch where he lived. This is right on Highway 65, so they couldn't blame it on bad roads or anything. Van Buren County is just north of Faulkner County in North Central Arkansas. The city of Van Buren is on the Western edge of the state by Ft. Smith.

Anyway, I called for the ambulance that never did come. They said they would arrive in about 15 minutes, but haven't been there till yet. My father-in-law didn't die that time as close as he came. We eventually (about 25 minutes later) managed to load him in my brother-in-laws car and got him to the hospital on our own. He died about two years later in 1989. All this happened before there was a 911 service in the county, and we have moved in the meantime. I don't know how the ambulance service is up there now that they do have the 911 service, and I hope I never have to find out Unless I miss my guess it won't be much better now than it was back then and is still very undependable, and that it is very unreliable like most other things in the county.

What a shame that people have such unreliable service there.

Sorry it left such a bad memory. These days in the small towns and rural areas of Texas our first responders are worked to death and it is all volunteer work. They are first to arrive and are trained to help medically somewhat too. They help the ambulance services to find us and are so appreciated. They work through fire departments and are so appreciated.
