AMC TV Series The Walking Dead: Why We're Not Sick of Zombies Yet

Ayanna Guyhto
Much commotion surrounds AMC cable network's newest brainchild, "The Walking Dead." Based on a 2003 comic book series, the show features a group of survivors attempting to navigate their way through a world populated by zombies (they're called "walkers.") While much of the hype surrounding this show is pretty gracious, there are some who chalk the series up to just another zombie movie rip-off. But there's a reason why this show has already been renewed for another season. Could that reason be that we're just not ready to put zombie culture to rest (even temporarily?) We could easily cite the history of the zombie genre as a sublime reason to pass over this TV series. But we're simply not ready to relinquish our love for the walking dead. Here's why...

...Because we are tired of watching detectives in fancy suits interrogate "tough" criminals on cop shows.

Some may wax poetic about "The Walking Dead's" regurgitated storyline and its plot holes. But the bottom line is that we want something different to sink our teeth into (extremely bad pun intended.) The truth is that we're sick of TV dramas in which hospital patients look like fashion models in Halloween costumes, and cops wear Versace to interrogate street thugs. "The Walking Dead" is a decent departure from all of that.

...Because we don't want to admit how much we actually liked the 28 Days Later movies.

Many have pointed out the extreme similarities of the 28 Days films and this AMC television series. (And speaking of, have you noticed exactly how much the music sounds just like the score from those films?) Yes, parallels may certainly be drawn. But how much different are zombie movies and shows really going to be? Chances are if you're a fan of the genre, you'll like this program.

...Because "The Walking Dead" has (6) episodes in its first season.

The execs knew exactly what they were doing by only creating six shows for the premiering season. That "hit-it and quit-it" approach is bound to leave viewers begging for more. Apparently, the tactic worked; "The Walking Dead" has already been renewed for a second go round.

...Because the story doesn't take place in New York or L.A.

Yep, good old Atlanta is the setting of this creepy tale. Those keeping up with TV pop culture know that the ATL is the place to be these days. It's nice to see the state of Georgia associated with a "big city"-instead of the Scarlett O'Hara-esque imagery that has been affixed to the state in previous TV shows and movies.

...Because any post-apocalyptic theme will resonate with viewers.

There is enough tragedy in the world that any particular world disaster could bring about conditions such as those seen in "The Walking Dead." Are we really expecting to see zombies stumbling around outside our homes in the near future? Some might say-they already are.

I am sick of zombies everywhere on tv and in the movies. How many times can you write the same thing over and over? They're not even scary anymore and The Walking Dead is one huge bore-fest. I like the old tv shows better than the crap that passes for tv these days, IMO!
