Amelia Grey's Tea Garden at Arizona's Buffalo Bistro

Restaurant Review: Inside Copper Country Antique Mall in Tucson

Odors of musty old book and furniture polish odors fill most antique malls, but at Tucson's Copper Country Antiques delicious aromas greet shoppers. Bargain hunters, antique collectors, and window shoppers follow our noses to homemade goodies in Buffalo Bistro and Amelia Grey's Tea Garden. The tea garden is casual and special at the same time. Visitors step into an indoor courtyard of English tea garden style of flowering vine lattices, creative recycled, new, antique items, and a large fountain feature in the center.

The eatery serves a large variety of teas, other non-alcoholic drinks, homemade breakfast, lunch and dessert from Monday through Saturday. Breakfast can cost as little as $3.50 for a giant homemade cinnamon roll and a cup of tea or coffee. The highest regular price menu item is the Aunt Marcie's Chicken Fruit Salad for only $8.25. Aunt Marcie's salad contains generous portions of grilled chicken breast, toasted pecans, gorgonzola cheese, and seasonal fruit on a bed of mixed greens. My husband and I like everything we've tasted so far like Aunt Wilma's Creme Brule French Toast, made casserole-style with French bread and creamy butter syrup at $4.95. Another favorite is a $6.95 baguette filled with slow-cooked barbeque brisket, called Uncle Rick's Barbeque. It is wise to save room for the homemade dessert ranging in price from $1.50 to about $4.00.

Besides the regular menu and hours, Amelia Grey's Tea Garden offers a monthly Saturday afternoon high tea available with limited reservations for about $15.00 per person. I witnessed Annette Hartman, the owner-operator, staging a big table for a private party mother-daughter high tea. Individual place settings consisted entirely of her amazing collection of vintage non-matching porcelain plates, bowls, cups, saucers, as well as linen napkins. Annette told me she had a fun and unexpected request from a group at the University of Arizona. They rented those dishes for a formal occasion. More often, she is asked to provide all-inclusive private catering services.
