I got up this morning and looked on espn.com to see that the Yankees have given Roger Clemens a contract for four months that will pay him $25,900,000. I put all the zeroes in there just so you can see how ridiculous this amount of money is. You could take two of the zeroes off and it would still take most of us ten years to make that amount of money.
I am not blaming Clemens for this because he is just taking what people are stupid enough to pay him, but it says a lot when an organization is willing to pay a man past his prime $215,833 a day. And he gets this money whether he actually plays or not. He may spend the day playing golf with his buddies down in Houston and he will still make the same amount.
I don't know about you, but the only way I get paid is if I am at my desk everyday on time working until the day is done. I know most will say he has a special skill and he is paid accordingly but that is a bunch of crap. I mean, what is more special, being able to throw a baseball or teaching a class full of high school students. I think one of these is slightly more important.
The average teacher in the state of North Carolina starts at $28,454. That comes to roughly $78 a day. It would take a teacher 910 years to make the amount of money that Clemens is going to make over the next four months. I think that pretty much illustrates why we should hate the Yankees.
I single out the Yankees because they have been doing this for years. I know that all major sports pay their athletes way too much but the Yankees seem to be the standard bearer for this insanity. They used to be the team every fan wanted to watch and emulate. They had clean cut players that stayed out of trouble and were very successful.
Don't get me wrong I like an organization that has clean players and sets a good example, but now instead of kids wanting to be firemen and lawyers they want that big payday they see their favorite ballplayers getting. I heard my nephew the other day saying he wanted to be a Yankee when he grows up and it almost made me sick.
It may sound old fashioned for a 24 year old to want to go back to a simpler way of life but I miss when kids had better dreams. When kids wanted to grow up to help people or make a difference. Now with organizations like the Yankees just throwing money at people, I worry that all the kids in our great country just want that easy payday.

Post a CommentAnd another thing.... to blame the Yanks for the social ills of this country is ludicrous. None of the money that is going to the yankee's payroll would go to teachers, believe me.
i am so proud. I read this article and steam started coming out of my ears... I was fully expecting to see a bunch of loser A's fans extoll the virture of billy beane (who hasn't won a playoff series). But instead my heart swelled with pride at the cogent defense of the Yanks! BRAVO!
BTW Clemens, if you look at the numbers, is only really past his prime if you look solely at his age. He posted two of his best seasons the last two years in Houston and has been arguably the best pitcher in baseball when he has pitched.
The Yankees gave him a lot of money...but Houston was the team that set the bar at over 20 million for his services, not New York. Besides even that...your logic is pretty bad. If we hate the Yankees for paying this much money, we should hate the movie industry for overpaying actors, the music industry for overpaying bands/artists, etc., etc. Look at some major companies and CEOs get hundreds of millions of dollars for FAILING. This might be the second time today I have to write a rebuttal article...
You can't blame athletes for getting what they can. We know how much they make, but do you know how much the owners make? Just think about that for a second. There is revenue from ticket sales at the gate, there is revenue from televised games, and there is revenue from ads at the game, and THEN there is the revenue from merchandising. And guess what.. no one is paying money to see the owners! The players generate the revenue and they should get as much as they can. Now with that said. I hate baseball and don't watch it.. its not a level field for the teams. Its basically the team with the most money wins, or at least has the best chance of winning. Why is that?
Its primarily because the owners don't share revenue like they do in football and evidently there are no salary caps. The Yankees get a lot of revenue from merchandising and TV. Like the Lakers, a lot of Yankee games are televised; they have rock star status. Like the Cowboys, they sell a lot of merchandise. But in football

And it's the Yankee's fault? Sounds like a ton of misplaced anger. 60k people are not showing up to watch teachers teach math. I am so sick of Yankee haters..if you like any professional sports teams or NASCAR which I do not consider a sport. You want an owner whom at all costs is going to put the best on the field to WIN. Half the fans in baseball wish they had an owner like George Steinbrenner. For as much as he makes off the team from tickets and merchandise sales you do not see him pocketing the money every year and putting garbage on the field. He actually does something insange like put it into his players and on the new stadium. The Cubs for years been ripping people off with crap, and they have just as much namesake in baseball yet they ain't been spending money and like morons their fans kept going. If you are really a fan of your team, do not go when they are crappy. Do not let the owners make you pay high prices when you got a nickel and dime team.
