America the Mockacracy

The State of the State is Rotten Tomatoes

James Kings
America the mockcracy-is that what the country is today? Two popular shows have skyrocketed in popularity by making fun of politicians, and now a movie has sprung forth to further illustrate the comical behind Congress' obviously apparent ineptness.

Is it that the U.S. government has grown to be such a joke that Americans can no longer tolerate talking of politics, unless if it is in a form of a joke. Is it that all that can hold American interest is caricature cartoons and perfectly delivered jokes?

Every year despite the party in power, the press bombards the public with uncovered scandals that range from deranged flirting with underage pageboys to listening to our phone conversations to sour real estate deals.

So is it anyone elses' fault but the American people that elect these buffoons? The surprise is that this is not a new development; even Mark Twain commented in his time "It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly American criminal class except Congress."

The surprise is that with the Internet at the fingertips, with television at the bedside that Americans continue to remain clueless as to whom they elect. There is nothing of concern but the letter attached beside the name and whether or not it stands for Democrat or Republican for some.

Should Americans depend so heavily on a political party affiliation to determine the better candidate? Simply the answer is no. The answer is going out and doing the work and finding out what a candidate stands for. Educate one on the issues. This shouldn't be told to a society that places such worth on hard work and education. Was the country not built on the first and moved on to value the latter?

Has it passed that somewhere a long the wayside America has lost her way and has lost sight her shining light to guide her by? Does dead forefathers roll in their graves at the state of the nation? Or could it be that in a nation where criticism has flown freely, even unashamedly bashing the first president it worships as a god, then, the country has and will continue to be criticized unrestrictedly.

No doubt that reflection and doubt are both key to maintaining an honest opinion, and there's no doubt that the jokes that American politicians have become the butt of are lacking an honest opinion of themselves. Americans seem to be coming to terms with the fact that not all is well in Washington.

Because even though the first president was criticized and even mocked, he still held an honest opinion of the state of things-whereas the politicians today lack an ounce of honesty and lack it for themselves most of all. No wonder, then, that they're a joke.
