* The American private citizens gave 1.78 billion dollars in relief when a terrible tsunami hit Asia. This giving was above and beyond what the United States Government gave in aid. Bringing relief to the suffering is in the very fabric of the American psyche. The Citizens of the US don't just give lip service to helping they reach out with their pocketbooks and with themselves in volunteerism. The very size of the dollars given dwarfs what any other developed nation could contribute.
* In a few short months after the devastating Asian tsunami a major earthquake hit Pakistan causing great devastation there. The American people stepped up and gave 78 million dollars to aid the suffering there.
* When America's own coastal areas got hit with hurricanes our people began sending in needed funds for rebuilding and relief. When hurricane's Katrina and Rita hit our shores, Americans responded and gave 3.12 billion dollars and relief efforts are still underway today.
The generosity of Americans shines through year after year in their willingness to give in big needs and in little needs. Americans donate an estimated one-quarter of a trillion dollars to charities such as the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and The American Cancer Society. This is in addition to what they give through their places of worship.
It is interesting to note how some places in the world view Americans as selfish and spoiled when this is the exact opposite of the truth. This view of America serves the interest of certain groups or countries that would like that image to remain. An important part of the American dream is and always will be expressed in giving to others needs.
The American people give in part because of their heritage and in how this country came into being. America is a nation of immigrants and virtually everybody who makes up this great country can call up their lineage. Knowing our roots, where we came from, we remember we came here with a dream. As each dream was realized we see we could not have become the great country we are without help from each other.
Each immigrant left his/her homeland with a dream and as each one's dream grew they built the greatest nation on earth. So in many ways we owe a debt to those who came before us. Many believe we owe a generational debt to pay back to all that pitched in and helped our ancestors establish this great country.
Our national politics will not dictate our zeal to help others who live beyond our shores. Americans will even put aside great political differences and help those who would even be our enemy. If storm, disaster, or disease hurts an enemy nation, the American people will give generously to help those who are suffering. The American people are a people who have that kind of deep empathy for others. That is what it means to be "an American".
It is very natural for the American people to feel this empathy for people of all races, colors and nationalities regardless of their country of origin. Because Americans are a people made up of immigrants from many different lands it is only natural to feel like we are touching our own family when we help those beyond our shores. That is the heart of what makes American charity so amazing and so generous. And you know this is just another in the many reasons why America is the greatest country in the world.

Post a Comment@filipinocharityman...have you looked at China?
but my President says he's God.
Without going into a debate about which country is better and spouting historical mistakes and accomplishments etc...Who cares who is the most generous country per citizen or gross income. This is a charity! not a contest! The US in gave 26 billion dollars in 2010 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_charitable_countries). That made up 30% of the entire world's donations. You can combine Germany and France's donations(which placed 2nd and 3rd) and it still wouldn't be enough. Charities are about helping the cause, and 26 billion dollars was a huge help.
"Americans are the most charitable people in the world. That is not just a generous exaggeration."
False. The three most generous countries in 2008 as donation per citizen in 2008 (report July 2010), are Luxembourg, Norway and Sweden. The US places 9th, after the UK.

filipinocharityman49... If the US were an Imperialist Country tell me why Canada isn't part of the USA? Also explain to me why Germany, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines' are still free? Tell me one country in which the US has conquered and took control over their government! You need to tell your school teacher to stop with the Communist and Islamic fascist lies and Indoctrination! The United states has made many mistakes in it's history but stand above every country in the world when it comes to Honor, Freedom, and Loyalty.
Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you:

The first died for your soul, the other for your freedom.
