American Chiropractic Association Gives Praise to U.S. Government

The ACA Commends Federal Endeavors to Restrict Prescription Drug Abuse

This congratulatory had been given after the U.S. Governments announcement that the problem of prescription drug abuse had now hit a crisis level. The announcement had been released in late April.

The ACA encourages both patients and healthcare practitioners to look into drug free, traditional approaches for pain management as a prime defense against painkiller abuse.

In "Epidemic: Responding to America's Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis,", the government report which remarks that even though the abuse of some illegal drugs has subsided, prescription painkiller abuse has immensely increased, particularly prescription opioid painkillers such as Oxycotin and Vicodin.

The report also discloses that accidental opioid overdose that was once almost solely limited to those who abused heroine, now currently is increasingly caused by prescription painkiller abuse.

In this new report it is also revealed that although at times use of these strong drugs could be required, their overuse and abuse can lead to dire consequences.

ACA President Dr. Rick McMichael states that the chiropractic profession provides non-drug treatment therapies for the relief of pain. Dr. McMichael also remarks that they are urging healthcare practitioners, whenever possible, to recommend drug-free traditional care interventions for their patients prior to prescribing medications in which possibly can be linked with harmful side effects. It is crucial that patients are aware of their options.

The most commonly abused three prescription drug classes are as follows:

Opioids such as codeine, oxycodone and morphine

Central nervous system depressants such as barbiturates and benzodiazepines

Stimulants such as dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate

Chiropractic care concentrates on disorders of the musculoskeletal system along with the nervous system and the effects of these disorders on general health.

Chiropractic care offers a totally drug-free approach to health care and most of the time treat neuromusculoskeletal disorders which includes but not limited to back and neck pain, pain in joints of arms or legs, headaches and migraines.

Science has confirmed that chiropractic care can aide in the treatment of numerous conditions and diseases.

Chiropractic care is also becoming increasingly popular with today's parents. Many children now see chiropractors mostly for preventative and wellness care. It has been noted by the CDC that at least 3% of all American children now see a chiropractor on a regular basis. The care from chiropractors offers a vast range of benefits to children with learning disorders and dyslexia. Not to mention other areas of children's health problems including asthma, headaches, sports injuries, hyperactivity and even colic.
