Independence Cruise Ship Christening on the 4th of July
American Cruise Lines' Independence cruise ship christening on the 4th of July will be by U.S. Sen. Susan M. Collins of Maine. Rockland Harbor is the location of the naming ceremony of the Independence cruise ship taking place at 9:15 a.m. American Cruise Lines will be presented with a key to the city.
American Cruise Lines' Independence cruise ship
The Independence, new American-flagged, cruise ship accommodates 104 passengers. The cruise ship has an elevator, Internet access, a large dining room and individual climate controlled stateroom. Activities enjoyed by passengers on board are musical displays, guest speakers and theatrical performances. The Independence cruise ship was built at the Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland. According to Vice President of American Cruise Lines Timothy Beebe, the cruise ship "passed its sea trials with flying colors." Independence cruise ship is different from the others in the fleet since it has a wider beam and Rolls Royce stabilizers, giving passengers more room on board and a more steady sail. The wider beam allows for larger staterooms, private balconies and larger public spaces. Cruises depart from Portland, Maine for a seven-night Maine Coast & Harbors sailing. Passengers will see Maine by land and water viewing charming ports, lobster wharfs, historic villages and Acadia National Park.

American Cruise Lines operates a fleet of small ships with the newest cruise ships in the industry. It offers 12 itineraries on both the West and East coasts. In the Pacific Northwest, American Cruise Lines sails on inland waterways and rivers. With Independence's size, guests tend to mingle and socialize in the public lounges and observation decks. All guests are served meals at one time. Seven to ten-day itineraries provide a new port each day. In addition to the Independence cruise ship, American Cruise Lines' includes, American Glory, American Star and the American Spirit cruise ships. Queen of the West, an authentic paddle wheeler will sail on the Snake and Columbia Rivers. Travel agencies offer discounts, specials and off-season deals.
