To Make This American Flag Tote Bag Pattern You Will Need:
Blue and White Star Fabric (canvas)
Red and White Striped Canvas
Scissors
Sewing Machine
To get started you want to cut out two squares of blue fabric to 5X5 inches. This can be any blue fabric. I recommend buying a blue canvas for this.
You can stamp your own white star s on using white fabric paint and a foam star stamp!
Now, cut out your red and white striped canvas or fabric to 12 inches by 12 inches. (If you want your American flag tote bag large, y all means make it any size you wish, the instructions will remain the same.
Now, on to the liner. For the liner you want to cut out 2 pieces of 12X12 inch fabric as well. Have some fun her, you can use a solid red canvas, polka dot fabric, or anything that coordinates well with the patriotic tote bag exterior.
Foe the handles you will need 2 pieces of 30 inch long fabric that is 4 inches wide. Again, this needs to be a sturdy fabric that coordinate swell wit ht hook of your American Flag tote bag. I like to use a plain natural colored canvas for this.
Finally, you are ready to assemble the tote bag! By the way, this is an easy patriotic fabric craft and kids who can sew a straight line will be able to make this.
First, make the handles. Fold the first strap in half. It will now be 2 inches wide by 30 inches long. Fold each half in half to create tow smooth edges and one fold. Sew this seam shut with a ½ inch seam allowance. Repeat on the other side of the strap to create symmetrical coordinating stitch lines.
Repeat to make the other handle on the free American flag tote bag pattern.
Now, Take one of the red and white stripes pieces of fabric. Place the blue square in the top left corner. Sew this son using a fun zig zag stitch. You may also want to apply some no fray product to the edges of the blue fabric to help prevent any fraying.
Repeat on the other remaining red and white stripe fabric.
Take one red and white striped fabric and lay it face up on your table. Lay the other matching piece face own on the table.
Sew the three sides together, leaving the top open. Repeat this with yoru liner fabric rectangles that are cut out to the same size. Leave a 8 in opening in the bottom of the lining though.
Now, Turn your exterior red and white bottom inside out. Slip the liner over it so that the two right sides are facing.
Pin the top edges together and sew them together rising a ½ inch seam allowance. Turn the American flag tote bag inside out.
Attached the handle stake the rough end of each handle and fold it over and iron flat to hide Th enough ends. Fold about ¼ inch.
Pin into place on the outsides of the American flag tote bag where they feel comfortable to you.
You will be making an upside down U on each side of the free American flag bag pattern.
Sew the handles in place by sewing a box at the end of each strap. This needs to be one inch wide and 2 inches tall. Sew an X in the middle of each box.
Finally, sew the opening in the liner shut and your patriotic tote bag is finished!
