American Flatbread Pizza in Ashburn, Virginia

Healthy, Tasty, Organic Pie in the Washington Area

The Washington D.C. metro area actually has many unique and high quality pizza restaurants and small chains. One of the newer additions is American Flatbread Pizza, where you can find an awesome and affordable artisan or premium pizza meal in a relaxed and fun environment.

American Flatbread Pizza is actually a small chain that began in Vermont, and just recently has expanded into the Virginia and Washington D.C. areas. There are two Virginia locations, this one in Ashburn and another one in Clarendon.

The focus at American Flatbread Pizza is on local ingredients and suppliers and organic food products. Additionally, everything is carefully hand prepared and selected, and the flatbread is cooked in a "primitive wood-fired earthen oven". The beauty is in the simplicity, and the pizza tastes amazing.

On the menu you'll find some of their classic flatbread recipes and menu items such as the sun-dried tomato and mushroom flatbread and the Revolution flatbread, featuring caramelized onions and mushrooms.

However, you'll also find a great selection of pizzas that are based solely on local products and change throughout the year. For example there is the Virginia County Ham, Apple and Cheddar flatbread, the New Virginia Sausage flatbread and a variety of changing specials.

The one thing that stays the same is that no matter which flatbread you order, the ingredients work together perfectly and the pizza is always cooked just right. The thin crust is just enough crunchy and just enough soft and chewy, and because you're eating a flatbread instead of a thick crust, you won't fill up as easily. Still, bring your appetite because each flatbread is large and you'll be hard pressed to order just one, even if there's just two of you.

You'll also find that each flatbread has its own recommendation for a wine or beer pairing, or both. Once again, the focus is on local products so that you'll find many tasty Virginia wines, and beers from establishments with breweries in the area, for example the DogFish Head Brewery.

Now you can even find American Flatbread Pizza in frozen form in many grocery stores as well. The pizza is quick and easy to make, and it might not be quite the same as fresh out of the wood burning oven, but it's a good substitute in a pinch.
