American Girl Doll Bag Craft: Make the Perfect Bag to Carry Your American Girl Doll In

This American Girl Doll bag is the perfect shape to set your American Girl Doll in and sling over your shoulder (or for your little girl to do this). Little girls of all ages can help make this American Girl doll craft, but you will need to help them with the cutting and sewing to make sure the tote bag comes out looking good!

To Make an American Girl Doll Tote Bag You Will Need:

Exterior Fabric

Liner Fabric

Canvas Ribbon or Handles

Sewing Machine

Scissors

Tape Measure

To get started you want to cut out 2 rectangles out of your exterior fabric and interior fabric to 10 inches wall and 13 inches long. These will be forming the bags of the bag.

Note: Please use a more heavy weight fabric like canvas or upholstery fabric in a fun pattern to make the exterior of the American Girl Doll Craft bag. It will provide support and structure for the bag.

If you do not want to do this, then use fusible interfacing and iron it into the exterior fabric to make it more stiff and sturdy.

Now, on to the handles. You can make your own handles or buy store made purse handles. Store made purse handles in the adult size make perfect should bag sized straps for a little girl for this carry bag.

If you want to make your own handles you will need to cut out 2 strips of yoru exterior fabric and interior fabric each to 3 inches wide and 20 inches long.

Note: If you want to make handles that curve or have shape, then cut tem to 5 inches wide. Take the first handle and fold it in half. Trim out some of the middle in a nice half oval shaped curve. Open this and use it as a pattern to trace t he rest of the handles for the American Girl Doll bag craft.

Now, to sew the handles lay the two exterior fabric face side up. Take the interior fabric strips and lay them face down, each one on top of the exterior piece. Sew the long sides shut on each side using a 3/8 inch seam allowance.

Take each handle and turn it inside out. Iron flat and set aside.

Now, take one piece of the exterior base fabric. Fold it in half length wise.

Use your scissors to round the two bottom corners. Trace this on to the rest of the base fabrics and cut them as well.

Now, take the 2 exterior piece and lay one face up on the table, Lay one on top face down. Sew along the sides and rounded bottom.

You want to repeat this step with the interior fabric, but leave a 5 inch opening on the bottom to help turn the American Girl Doll crafts inside out.

Now, turn the exterior fabric right side out. Take your handles and position them on each side. Pin in place with pins. You basically want to pin them upside down at the top edge, where you want them to be.

Take the interior fabric and pull it up over the outside of the exterior fabric. Line up the top edges and make sure the handles are down in between the two fabrics. Sew along the top edge with a 3/8's inch seam allowance.

Turn the whole American Girl Doll craft inside out and then sew the liner shut!
