Tip: You can use this American Girl Doll No Sew Dress pattern craft for any doll you have at home, so do not feel limited to the American Girl Doll!
To Make an American Girl Doll No Sew Dress You Will Need:
Felt
Fabric Glue
Scissors
Chalk
Self Adhering Velcro
To get started you want to cut out a piece of felt, or other no fray fabric, to 14 inches tall. This is how tall the dress will be, so feel free to lengthen or shorten it as you wish.
Now, cut it about 20 inches wide. This will be trimmed down, but it is easiest for younger children to start with a wider piece of material and trim later.
Use your chalk to outline the main body and arms of your American girl doll on the felt. Trace the neck, shoulder, and arm pits carefully.
Remove your doll now. Use the outline of the body to draw out the shift dress shape. Imagine drawing g a dress on a cartoon drawing or stick figure.
First, outline the dress. You want to start at the neck or collar area. This is a strapless sundress; so start right below the arm pits. You can draw a straight line across or even scallop the top like a heart.
Now, work on the width of the sun dress for your American girl doll. Measure how wide the doll is. Now, how deep is her side. This is a great way for little girl's to learn how to measure an item with a ruler or tap measure.
Now, for a little math. Take the width and multiply it by 2. Do the same with the depth of the doll. Now, add one inch. This is how wide the sun dress needs to be at the bodice to wrap around your American Girl Doll!
Lay your American girl doll back on the felt and mark where her waist is. Remove the doll and use the chalk to draw lines to the left and right of the bodice and waist to the size you measured before.
Now, have fun making a cool skirt. It is a fun look to draw out from the main square shaped bodice of the sun dress to form a triangle. This will give a full skirt to the sundress craft.
Now, cut out the main body of the dress craft for your American girl doll.
Take an accent fabric or another color of felt and cut out belt. Use fabric glue to adhere this to the front of the sun dress.
Now, use self adhering Velcro on the back of the bodice of the dress to hold the sundress onto yoru American Girl doll. Even though it is self adhering Velcro use some fabric glue with it. This will make the homemade sun dress last so much longer and been stand up to gentle washing.
Wrap on your sundress and your American girl Doll craft is finished!
Note: This is a simple craft, perfect for younger girls who love to make crafts, create clothes for their dolls, and have fun!
