American Girl Gets into the Cyber Monday Game

Victoria Leigh Miller
The American Girl website rarely offers discounts, but on Cyber Monday it's a whole new ball game.

With Cyber Monday in full swing today, toys and electronics continue to be the most sought after items. While Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters have been the most sought after toy item this season, they are still virtually impossible to find at online retailers like Toys R Us and Target. But for girls, there's another toy option on this Cyber Monday. American Girl, the popular American doll company, is offering discounted prices on some of their most popular items.

American Girl rarely offers deep discounts, but today on their website they have several pages of items listed at reduced prices. Some of the best deals include Chrissa's Snow Gear, which is slashed from $32 down to $20. Also on sale is Chrissa's Snow Outfit, which is down to $20 (the original price is $30). Chrissa is the American Girl of the Year Doll for 2009 and will only be available until December 31st or while supplies last. American Girl of the Year dolls typically sell out before the end of the year.

A few items are even half price, which is virtually unheard of at American Girl. Some half price items include accessories like the Holiday Treat Set and doll sized American Girl sweatshirts. American Girl Trading cards are only $1 and are a great stocking stuffer idea for American Girl collectors.

Traffic to the American Girl website is heavy, with some buyers reporting that they can't even get on to the popular website. And once you do get on to the website, don't expect to see a discount on the dolls themselves. The American Girl dolls are highly collectible and never go on sale. Occasionally the company offers coupon codes for online orders, but on Cyber Monday the sale prices are already shown on the website. Most of the sale items are American Girl doll clothes, accessories and girl sized clothes.

The American Girl of the Year Doll for 2010 , which is rumored to be the first African American Girl of the Year, is expected to be announced within the next few weeks.

Absolutley the worst online experience I've had in a while. While American girl advertised cyber monday specials, they clearly didn't mention it to their IT staff, server performance wouldn't allow you to place the order. To make matters worse, when you tried to call the 1-800 number to order via phone, the volume there was too much for them to handle as well- so they hung up on you. After 13 hours of trying to place the order, 1/2 of the items on sale were no longer available. To add insult to injury - they offered no customer friendly. It'll be the last order I place.

Yeah, too bad their servers couldn't handle the traffic. Completely overwhelmed their website and phone lines.

I got mine using the service at www.amzpricesniper.com. It watched the Amazon inventory and the moment Amazon received fresh inventory at the regular retail price this obnoxious alarm went off. I jumped on the computer and scored 2 zhuzhus for less than $20 bucks.

My niece is still too young for these, but I'll be keeping American Girl in mind for the future!
