American Girl of the Year Doll 2011: Kanani Akina to Make Her Debut on 1/1/11

It's out with the old and in with the new. And in the world of doll collecting, that means it is time to say goodbye to the 2010 American Girl of the Year Doll and meet the latest member of the club, the American Girl of the Year 2011.

The release of the annual American Girl of the Year doll is a highly guarded secret, but enthusiastic collectors often sleuth their way to the doll's identity weeks before the official release.

While American Girl isn't expected to make the official Girl of the Year 2011 announcement until January 1, the book titles say it all: Kanani Akina will be the newest American Girl.

Each year several book titles accompany the Girl of the Year, and the "Kanani Akina" titles- written by author Lisa Yee- are already available for order on sites like Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The books titles are "Aloha, Kanani" and "Good Job, Kanani"

Lisa Yee is the author of a previous AG book titled, "Good Luck, Ivy."

You can see the cover to the book "Aloha, Kanani" here.

The 2010 American Girl of the Year doll, Lanie Holland, will no longer be available after December 31, 2010.

American Girl describes Lanie as "an energetic girl who discovers the world in her back yard."

Indeed, Lanie is an environmentally conscious girl who loves animals and recycles. Some of her accessories include a gardening outfit, a set of wildlife animals and a camper.

But Lanie is soooo 2010.

At the January 1st American Girl of the Year 2011 celebration at American Girl stores across the country, Kanani Akina will make her debut as Lanie is swiftly removed from store shelves.

The American Girl website invites fans to join " to celebrate our newest Girl of the Year! She loves to share the spirit of her tropical island home".

The celebration includes a weekend full of crafts and activities. American Girl stores are located in Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and New York.

As for the end of the 2010 American Girl of the Year doll, all we can say is- Lanie, we hardly knew ye!

My daughter is 10 years old. She has the Bitty Baby and 5 AG dolls. We make a trip to Atlanta at least twice a year. We make it an outing with one other chosen friend each time we go. I ACTUALLY enjoy it myself. We can't wait for The Girl of The Year!!!!

I am 15 and have been collecting ever since I was born and still love the magic of the dolls. One day I hope to share the experiences I have had with the dolls with my own daughter. I still colllect them and I have all the dolls of the years and samantha&nellie, felicity&elizabeth, kaya, and the twins. The magic is never lost.
