American Idol 2010 Contestants Vie for Top 8 Spots

Front-runners Begin to 'Come Together'

Tuesday's American Idol theme was comprised of songs written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed by that decision. Talk about great song choice. The remaining American Idol vocalists are all noteworthy, but the top contenders are quickly emerging.

Casey James had his best performance to date on American Idol. He chose "Jealous Guy," which is not as mainstream as some of the other Lennon-McCartney tunes. I loved the acoustic guitar and simple musical accompaniment. Casey's rendition was heartfelt and believable. Previous to Tuesday, I wasn't sure he'd end up in the top five, but I think he turned it around with the impressive depth of his vocals.

Crystal Bowersox just doesn't disappoint the American Idol audiences. "Come Together" was a perfect fit for her style. The addition of the didgeridoo (hollowed log wind instrument) was a perfect touch. At times there was a slight hint of the cold that she had contracted, but Crystal was on target as usual and her personality really came through tonight also. I not only put her in the top five...I peg her as the winner.

Katie Stevens was in her element on Tuesday's American Idol singing "Let It Be." Her voice was strong, and she was letting it go. I had her in my 'iffy' category before, but I'd say she proved that she can be a top five contender.

Siobhan Magnus did the unexpected Tuesday on American Idol by showing a softer side with "Across the Universe." Idol judge Kara Dioguardi commented that she didn't know what to make of this different side of Siobhan. I believe she was just following the judges' advice and trying to 'change it up'. Siobhan hit some beautiful notes. It did seem at points that she restrained her range, probably trying not to scream. I think she takes the judges' criticism too much to heart. Let's face it... "Nothing's gonna change her world" at this point in time. Sure, she'll be in the top five, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Lee DeWyze wrapped up American Idol singing "Hey Jude." He was even joined by a kilt-wearing bagpipe player midway through the song. I loved the confidence Lee exuded. Judge Simon Cowell wasn't thrilled with the addition of the bagpipes. I think a few weeks ago that might have bothered Lee. Tuesday he didn't seem to care. He's beginning to realize that he really is good. Lee did hit a couple bad notes and seemed to strain at one point, but his distinct tone reigned throughout the song.

Andrew Garcia's performance of "Can't Buy Me Love" was energetic and well-done. Simon called him "corny and old-fashioned," but I didn't think so. I liked the way Andrew handled himself. In previous weeks, he almost seemed arrogant...no doubt due to nerves...but that appears to be gone. Although I don't think he'll make it to the top five, he delivered an enjoyable performance.

Michael Lynche's rendition of "Eleanor Rigby" was a bit showy but interesting. I loved the string accompaniment. Big Mike hit some great notes and some weak notes too. As much as I like his personality, I'll be surprised if Michael ends up as one of the top five American Idol finalists.

Tim Urban seemed afraid to smile on American Idol. He apparently didn't want to be ridiculed by the judges anymore for his incessant grinning. Tim has always had that 'Beatle look' and it fit right in as he sang "All My Lovin'." His performance didn't shake the earth, but it was pleasant. It's hard to predict how far Tim will go given his fan base. In reality, he shouldn't last much longer.

Aaron Kelly is going in the wrong direction. He is adorable, but his performances lately aren't. Although he's proven he has a strong voice, his tone is shaky, especially in the lower register. Perhaps at the young age of 16, it's just all getting to him. He sang "The Long and Winding Road" on American Idol tonight. Maybe he thought it would be a good exit song.

I hope to see Katie and Siobhan gone in the next two weeks. I was so glad they saved Big Mike, but I don't understand how he was even in the bottom three. Nicely written.
