American Idol 2010 Dismal Girls' Night- Except for Dark Horse Siobhan Magnus, Crystal Bowersox, & Katelyn Epperly

Season 9

Tuesday, February 23, 2010. An early comment by Simon on American Idol tonight was, "this is the girls' year." Based on what we've seen of the boys, I would challenge Simon but he's the one who's watched the Top 24 boys and girls rehearse all week. So, he should know. Yet, after watching tonight's dismal performances, I have to say that if this is the girls' year, then the boys must be horribly bad. And I doubt that.

Paige Miles opened up the show singing Bad Company's 'All Right Now', which Simon called a wedding-band song. Ellen really liked Paige. One judge told her that of all the girls, she had the best voice. Sewn into her dress, Paige said she'd been 'waiting to pee for five hours'. Crude comment aside, Paige should stay on the show.

Beautiful Ashley Rodriguez looked different with hair back and no bangs. She's said she's currently a Jordin Sparks fan. Was she not a fan before competing on American Idol? Ashley was out of her league singing Leona Lewis song 'Happy'. She did not show she's Top Ten Material.

Talk about botching up a song. Blonde Janell Wheeler completely annihilated Ann Wilson's 'What About Love'. She crooned as a singer in a cheap nightclub. Where are the rotten tomatoes? It's time for Janell to go home.

Platinum-haired Lilly Scott wowed the judges with her uniqueness. I like her but after tonight, I don't care if she's 'Fixing a Hole' on American Idol or at home.

Katelyn Epperly did an effortful 'Oh! Darling', a great Beatles tune that Paul McCartney particularly raucously excelled on. My partner and I liked what Katelyn did but the judges were out for blood. And even though Kara didn't like Katelyn's red lipstick and dolled-up look, we did. Katelyn is a keeper.

Haeley Vaughn was very sweet singing 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' by the Beatles. She did a brave very unique arrangement. I wanted to like it. But Haeley's voice didn't cut the mustard. Still, Haeley will last another week.

Lacey Brown was only just okay tonight but she looked awesome. If votes keep her on the show, they won't have been a 'Landslide'. I'd like to see her have another chance.

Michelle Delamor, the wannabe diva, according to judge Kara, was, according to me, 'Fallin' on her face. What a waste of a great voice. As Simon said, her performance was depressing. But she will be around next week.

After all Didi Benami has endured- not that other contestants haven't had tough times- she deserves to succeed. Yet, Didi didn't pour her usual heart and soul into 'The Way I Am'. Still, she had said beforehand that given all the tears America has seen her cry, she wants to show another side. But if her tears put the heart and soul into her song, then I'd rather see her cry.

Siobhan Magnus is Top Ten material with her deep voice, beautiful face, and great presence. Three judges didn't like her 'Wicked Game'. But as Simon has said, Siobhan is a dark horse. My partner and I loved her performance. The audience gave her a standing ovation. Ellen said she forgot she this was a contest ; she felt she was 'just being entertained'. Yes, that's how we felt. Siobhan rocked!

My favorite to win American Idol 2010, Crystal Bowersox, although a disappointment tonight, was still mighty fine and was given a standing ovation by the audience. But to put a 'Hand in My Pocket', Crystal would had to have been eight-armed Hindu goddess Ashta Lakshmi as she once again played the harmonica and guitar. Randy and Ellen each said, 'I'm a fan'. My partner and I are still fans, too. But now I'm favoring a different number one- Siobhan. How fickle I am.

Katie Stevens impressed me last week. She has a big voice and knows how to use it. Or she did until tonight when she kept going off-key. As Randy said, she was 'pushing the notes and going sharp'. Katie sang the wildly-popular 'Feeling Good', made most popular by Michael Bublé. She tried to act like a thirty-year-old lounge singer, which did not become her especially. But Katie should definitely stay.

Tonight's performances put the Top 12 girls off to a shaky start in the singing competition, as Simon likes to call it. My top three tonight to consider for the Top Ten are Siobhan Magnus, Crystal Bowersox, and Katelyn Epperly. My bottom three are: Janell Wheeler, Haeley Vaughn, and Ashley Rodriguez. I may be mistaken about the bottom three but I believe my top three will do very well. To find out about the Top 12 guys, click here.
