American Idol 2010 Season 9. Wednesday, April 21, 2010. The Top 12 contestants, dressed in white, kicked off the April 21 elimination night with a group performance. Someone will be eliminated from the Top 7 for sure since the judges used up their one-save-per season a couple of weeks ago on Michael Lynche. The judges are Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi, and Simon Cowell. The host is Ryan Seacrest. This week's mentor was Alicia Keys. The two-hour-plus show is an Idol Gives Back fundraiser. The second kick-off performance came from Fergie and the Black-Eyed Peas with 'Rock That Body'.

Highlights of the judges critique. Comedian George Lopez had the lighting changed, told the Top 7 to stand up and then sit down, and then proceeded to critique the judges. He said Randy says 'pitchy' and 'dog' all the time. He called him safe and then said that Kara always says, "I wanted you to make it your own... I'm so disappointed in you." He pronounced her safe. He told Ellen she always says, "I loved that." He pronounced her safe. George then said to Simon, "You always say that's 'rubbish'." He joked about Simon's tight tee-shirts and then said, "America has voted and you have to go back to England'. Then he pronounced Simon safe.

Elimination Time: Ryan said, "Dim the lights." He asked Crystal Bowersox and Casey James to join him center stage. He then relegated Casey to the bottom three, his first time. Crystal is safe; she returned to the safety couch. Aaron Kelly and Lee DeWyze joined Ryan next. Lee is safe. Aaron is in the bottom three.

Among the mix of fundraising speeches were musical performances, including Jeff Beck and Joss Stone's 'Put a Spell on You'- very dynamic. Crystal should take note. Perhaps so should Siobhan and all the guys. As Queen Latifah had fundraised earlier in the show, so did Morgan Freeman now for the literacy program 'Save the Children'. Alicia Keys performed 'Un-thinkable (I'm Ready)' and 'Pocket Full of Dreams'. Carrie Underwood sang 'Change'. Microsoft Bill and Melinda Gates made a taped appearance; Wanda Sykes did live comedy.

Elimination Time: Ryan said, "Dim the lights." He invited Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche, and Tim Urban to center stage. Ryan pronounced Siobhan safe! And then Michael. Tim joined Casey and Aaron in the danger zone, stage right (audience left).

More fundraising and performances: David Cooke talked about his visit to Ethiopia. Annie Lennox was grounded in London because of Iceland's volcanic ash but she appeared on video to fundraise and to sing 'Learn to Fly, I Can Feel You', while in the U.S., the American Idol band backed her. Mary J. Blige, Randy Jackson (bass guitar), and Orianthi (lead guitar) performed Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven'. Actor Ben Affleck fundraised on tape; Sir Elton John, at the piano, sang 'Your Song'.

Who will be eliminated- Casey James, Aaron Kelly, or American Idol's only Jedi knight Tim Urban, with whom the Force is strong. Tim slipped in unexpectedly, replacing the unfortunate Chris Golightly who could not find his contract release from a boy band in time. Then, despite continual trouncing by the judges, Tim remained on the show week after week- landing in the bottom three nearly every week, although not last week. Ryan said, "Dim the lights. Aaron, you are safe for one more week. After the nationwide vote, the person leaving American Idol tonight is Tim Urban." Oh well- Aaron should have gone. But Casey fans, including Kara, must be delighted that Casey is safe. The show took a look at the journey of Tim Urban on American Idol. With the show on overtime, there was no time for him to sing. Season 9 is left with its Top 6 singers!

It's about time! Tim had one good performance, nice guy, good hair, smiles, laugh a lot, sings o.k. Should not be there just because of looks and popularuty. Simon is right, "At the end of the day, this is a singing contest!"

Excellent review. Curious if they will give T. Urban a chance to sing an exit song next week. Not a fan of his, but just seemed a bit unfair to those who have supported him.
