'American Idol' 2010 Season 9 Spoilers: Top 11 Theme Changed to Billboard #1 Hits

No Teen Idol Tunes on American Idol?

Perhaps the execs over at FOX got cold feet and began to shudder at the thought of really bad Bobby Sherman or Debbie Gibson song renditions. Or perhaps they decided it wasn't all that great of a theme idea to begin with. Whatever the case may be, the American Idol Season 9 Top 11 theme was changed over the weekend-- from Teen Idols to Billboard #1 Hits. That means we won't get to hear Andrew Garcia attempt a Tiffany tune. And 17 year old Katie Stevens may have just lost her edge.

While no reason for the theme change was given, MJ's Big Blog reported that the theme was indeed changed late last week, after an original press release stated that the Top 11 theme would be Teen Idols. The American Idol website confirms that the Top 11 theme will now be Billboard #1 hits.

While this theme will certainly be easier for most of the contestants, I don't think it will be nearly as fun. I really wanted to see Crystal Bowersox attempt a Selena Gomez or Miley Cyrus song!

According to Wikipedia, the Billboard Hot 100 charts began in 1958. Idol contestants could feasibly still choose a teen idol song, too. Teen heartthrob Ricky Nelson had the first #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit back in 1958, with "Poor Little Fool". 10 years later The Beatles charted at number one with " Hey Jude". And Andy Gibb's "Shadow Dancing" ruled the Billboard number one spot during the summer of 1978. So as you can see, the possibilities are endless.

Of course if someone chooses a 1980's number one song, we could hear a Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam tune or something from the Human League. The 1990's brought number one's like Kriss Kross' "Jump " and the Sir Mix-a -Lot song, "Baby Got Back". I'm assuming the Idol contestants will stay far, far away from these song choices.

Oh, and by the way, Andrew Garcia still could pull a Tiffany. The teen idol's biggest song, "I Think We're Alone Now" hit number one on the Billboard charts in November of 1987. So you never know....

You can see what Billboard #1 Hits the contestants sing on American Idol, Tuesday night at 8:00 PM ET/PT on FOX.

Thanks for the info. I really wanted to hear them sing some teen idol songs, too. Billboard #1's will be interesting, though.
