'American Idol' 2011: Best Vocalist Eliminated

"American Idol's" Season 10 took an unexpected turn on April 7, 2011. Pia Toscano, the 22-year old power-house singer from Howard Beach, New York, was voted off the show, shocking fellow contestants, audience members and judges alike.

Although this season's contestants are some of the best to date, Pia - pegged early on as a favorite to win it all - arguably had the best voice of the top nine Idols. She was consistently spot-on and pitch-perfect. She received a standing ovation more than once on "American Idol." The only criticism she received was that she needed to develop her performance style. Jennifer Lopez advised her to watch videos of other performers. She was quick to add that she thought Pia was "spectacular" and was offering her advice purely because she felt there was greatness in her vocals. In a prior show, J-Lo told Pia that she was in a league with Celine Dion and Whitney Houston.

Host Ryan Seacrest questioned the "American Idol" judges regarding Toscano's elimination. They all voiced anger and confusion. If they still had the option of saving a contestant, they surely would have used it for Pia, but they depleted that alternative earlier in the season when they saved Casey Abrams.

Stefano Langone and Jacob Lusk joined Toscano in the bottom three. Jacob was first to get the news that he was safe. Stefano was as shocked as everyone else when he was sent back to join the remaining singers. Pia went out with style, but she was visibly upset. She managed to work her way through a rendition of The Pretenders "I'll Stand by You."

The only female contestants remaining now are Haley Reinhart and Lauren Alaina. That means chances are good that the 2011 "American Idol" will again be a male. The competition hasn't been won by a female since 17 year old Jordin Sparks took first place four years ago.

Toscano will perform with the other top eleven Idols when they go on tour this summer. I have a strong feeling that we haven't heard the last of Pia Toscano.

People don't vote for the best, figuring everybody else will. Wrong! Hope she has a great career anyway.

It was a total shocker. I really thought that Stefano was going to get the axe, and I think that he is next on the elimination list.
