Ta-Tynisa Wilson
Wearing a short, sleeveless dress with a flared skirt and white peeptoe boots, Ta-Tynisa belted out Rihanna's "Only Girl." It was passable, but not fabulous. Steven called the performance a beautiful way to start the show, and Jennifer agreed that she "really brought it home." Randy differed, calling it "okay" and saying that it "paled in comparison" to the original.
Ta-Tynisa's week one grade: C+
Naima Adedapo
"Summertime" proved a sunny success for Naima, who began her performance with a sultry shimmy onstage and seemed to absolutely adore her minutes in the spotlight. The girl can sing. Jennifer likened her to "an exotic flower in a rose garden" and loved the final note of the song. Randy called it "a little lounge act-y" but praised her for the way she acted it out, while Steven called her offering "unbelievable."
Naima's week one grade: A-
Kendra Chantelle
Kendra sang a soft version of Christina Aguilera's "Impossible" that was mostly good, but shaky at times. Working the stage, however, was not her forte. Randy said that her vibrato reminded him of Lauryn Hill, while Steven called her "hot" all-around. Jennifer said she loves her heart, but feels like they're "only scratching the surface" of what Kendra is capable of delivering.
Kendra's week one grade: B
Rachel Zevita
Fiona Apple's "Criminal" was Rachel's pick for the evening. She had the look, in a red and black minidress, and she worked the stage well, but the vocals were a tad bit shaky in the middle. Steven called it "a little too Broadway to me" and Jennifer built on that, asking Rachel how she wanted America to view her: As Broadway star or a recording artist. Randy said "it wasn't great" and that it wasn't recognizable as a Fiona Apple song.
Rachel's week one grade: B-
Karen Rodriguez
A bilingual version of the Mariah Carey hit "Hero" was Karen's intriguing debut performance pick. She hit some lovely notes and I was way impressed with her. Jennifer "wowed" five or six times and loved how she'd shown her "flavor." Randy praised her for making it her own, and said that the Spanish was better than the English. Steven called her a "one of a kind singer" and suggested that she sing it alongside fellow competitor Jacob Lusk. (Yes! Great idea!)Karen's week one grade: A-
Lauren Turner
The "young Bette Midler" went the way of the "Seven Day Fool," showcasing the strength of her pipes and vocal ability and range. Randy proclaimed "that's how you do it, man" and liked the whole "Amy Winehouse meets Florence and the Machine" feel to the performance. Steven called it "spectacular; it's like Lauren Turner meets Lauren Turner." Jennifer called her voice "undeniable" but told her to do more with her total performance.
Lauren's week one grade: B+
Ashthon Jones
She started off strong with her rendition of Monica's "Love All Over Me," but it wasn't an overwhelmingly strong performance throughout. Something about it didn't sound quite right; it was almost as if the song handcuffed her voice and made it weaker than it should've rightfully been. Steven praised her for having "the confidence of a queen" while Jennifer said "you have all the makings of a diva." Randy agreed with his fellow judges, but said that she should assume "more challenges" in her future song choices. He told her to think Diana Ross.
Ashthon's week one grade: B
Julie Zorrilla
Lesson for "American Idol" 2011 contestants: Don't try to sing a Kelly Clarkson song unless your voice is as rich and full as Kelly's. Julie's version of "Breakaway" was lackluster at best, weak at worst. She has a pretty voice, but seemed to have a ton of trouble controlling it and hitting the right notes. Ouch. Jennifer said that it wasn't the best thing she'd seen her sing, and told her to "sing from the heart." Randy called it "not nearly as good" as Kelly's version. Steven called it the "wrong song for you."
Julie's week one grade: C
Haley Reinhart
Alicia Keys' "Fallin'" was Haley's week one choice, and she did a decent job of making it her own, courtesy of her scratchy voice and a few unusual notes. She certainly has one of the more unique tones in the competition, but there was something not entirely organic about her performance. Maybe it was how she seemed to stumble uncomfortably around the stage? Randy said "it didn't do anything for you" and encouraged her to take a Janis Joplin route instead. Steven disagreed, saying she'd delivered the right amounts of "style and sexy." Jennifer sided with Steven, but told her to watch her movements.
Haley's week one grade: B
Thia Megia
The youngster delivered a hauntingly beautiful rendition of "Out Here On My Own." Her voice is stunningly clear and melodic. Wow. Love her. Steven said "I can't believe you're 15" and called it "beautiful." Jennifer called it "a quiet moment in the middle of all these big performances" and deemed it "really, really special." Randy likened the tone of her voice to that of Michael Jackson, and declared "this is what hot singing is about."
Thia's week one grade: A
Lauren Alaina
"Turn on the Radio" by Reba McEntire served as Lauren's debut tune, and the country gal worked it well. Jennifer, referring to her as "my little Lauren," praised the effortlessness of her voice and called her "such a natural." Randy called her a combination of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood on the way to deeming himself a fan, and asserted that not even Lauren herself knows how good she is. Steven said "I love you, you're the best." Just a little high praise. (Oh, and Lauren dubbed Ryan Seacrest "peaches," much to the host's chagrin. Ha ha.)
Lauren's week one grade: A
Pia Toscano
The Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You" never sounded sweeter than it did coming from Pia's lips. She hit all the right notes and held them beautifully from start to finish. What a way to end the night. Randy noted that she'd earned the first standing ovation of "American Idol" 2011, and said "that's how you do it!" Steven called it "so over the top." Jennifer said it was "out of this world," and said she'd been "a little bit sneaky" saving her best for night one.
Pia's week one grade: A+

Post a CommentI like the top 10 selected by voters. Less impressed with the wildcards except for Stefano.
You and I are on the same page with our takes on the girls...some good ones...some not so impressive.
