American Idol: Almost All New for 2010

Fans were right when they said that American Idol would never be the same without Simon Cowell.

This week has been full of shake-ups in American Idol world, some that viewers could never have predicted.

First, Ellen announced her retirement from the American Idol judging table. According to her website, "It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for. I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings." Ellen did give FOX and Idol several months notice, but didn't make her announcement until now so that they could find a replacement for the show.

Behind the scenes, Nigel Lithgoe, current executive producer of So You Think You Can Dance, took over as the Executive Producer of Idol.

Next, TMZ reported that Kara DioGuardi was fired by FOX. An insider reported that the only way Kara would be back was if another deal fell through.

Randy was spared by the American Idol producer, reportedly because they wanted at least one familiar face at the judging table next season.

So, who is going to be judging American Idol talent along with Randy next year?

Nigel decided to go back to the three-judge format. While they had expanded the panel to four judges when Ellen joined Randy, Kara and Simon, he wanted to take it back to three.

Ellen's Idol spot is reportedly going to none other than Jennifer Lopez. She was a mentor to the contestants back in 2007, and was praised for her work with them. She also has plenty of music experience (something American Idol fans complained about with Ellen was her lack of music experience). According to Deadline Hollywood, Jennifer inked her deal with FOX earlier today.

Kara is being replaced by Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler. According to TMZ, Tyler has the job. TMZ reports, "Neither Tyler nor "Idol" have confirmed -- but Tyler is in town and FOX does have their big TCA event on Monday... so you do the math."

With the dire predictions that some have made regarding American Idol's future and trying to replace Simon Cowell, this comes as a surprise. American Idol decided that instead of trying to find another Simon, they'd just reinvent the whole show. There's definitely not much to compare the show with now! Only time will tell if the changes are something the viewers will tune in for, or if Simon's departure really is the beginning of the end for Idol.
