American Idol, April 21 - Disco Night
Adam Lambert and Kris Allen Deliver Best Performances of the Night
Lil Rounds started off the night with I'm Every Woman By Chaka Kahn. Once again, Lil's performance received harsh criticisms from the judges. Randy thought it sounded wild and that Lil didn't show the vocal control she has. Kara was even more direct saying, "We've all been waiting for you to sing Chaka Kahn but it wasn't worth the wait. You have been every woman on this stage, just not yourself." Paula mentioned that Lil had lost her voice a few days ago and thought she made a remarkable recovery. Simon summed it up and said, "I think this is going to be the last week we see you." Kris Allen sang Donna Summer's She Works Hard For The Money. Kara said, "You took a risk and it paid off big time. I'm so impressed with you. I have to give you props." Paula thought it was classy with a Santana feel. Simon thought it was original and a fantastic performance. Randy said he is ready for the big time.
Danny Gokey performed Earth Wind and Fire's September. Randy thought it was good performance and the song worked for him. Kara said he is an incredible vocalist and Paula said he has the sexiest voice she has ever heard. Simon said, "I didn't get it. You are lacking star power. It looked awkward and clumsy." Allison Ireheta sang another Donna Summer blockbuster, Hot Stuff. Randy and Kara said she is one of the best singers in the competition. Paula liked her authenticity and edginess. And, Simon said, "That was a brilliant performance." Adam Lambert, a clear front runner, sang If I Can't Have You. Randy said, "You are ready right now dude. He is a hot one tonight." Kara said the performance was brilliant and Paula loved his vulnerability. Simon thought Adam's performance was original and his vocals were immaculate.
Matt Giraud, who benefited from last week's judges save, performed The Bee Gee's Stayin' Alive. Randy said he could really sing. Kara was happy that he brought disco back and thought it was a solid performance. Paula said they saved him last week and he saved himself tonight. Simon disagreed and said, "I didn't like the performance. You need to get out of the Idol world. You looked desperate and it wasn't original." Anoop Desai closed out the show with another Donna Summer hit, Dim All The Lights. Randy said, "You can sing. Great vocals. Nice baby nice." Kara thought it was a great song choice and loved the ballad feel. She felt these past two weeks have been Anoop's best performances of the season. Paula liked his look and thought his vocals were beautiful. Simon said, "I thought it was a mediocre performance at best."
Tune it tomorrow night at 9:00 PM EST on FOX for the live results show when two contestants will be sent home.
