American Idol Boston Top Five List

American Idol Starts Season Nine with Auditions in Boston

Mary Zeiher
American Idol is back with the start of season nine of the hit TV show and it was in Boston. Let's sort through the list of auditions and find the American Idol Boston Top Five List.

I didn't miss Paula Abdul at all, now I did almost miss the singing - as there seemed to be so little of that. There was however lots of contestants, tears, angry words, then came lots of jumping for joy, nervous waiting, weird people and -oh, yeah - American Idol eventually had some singing.

American Idol tried to hide the actual singing last night, behind all the stories and non-drama of the wait to perform by a bespeckled-wannabe, but occasionally there were actual auditions that meant there was singing. Now that was only when the judges weren't talking, which involved very little of the time actually.

The overtly uber-thin, ex-Posh Spice girl, Victoria Beckham was the guest judge last night on American Idol, maybe we should only count her as 'half a judge'. I'm sure it was hard for the directors to have to stop the show every time Ms. Beckham would turn sideways in her chair - because we would lose sight of her completely. Some advice for the ex-Posh: eat a meal.

American Idol did have some talent in Boston last night and here are my American Idol Boston Top Five:

American Idol Boston Top Five List #1

Ashley Rodriguez had the whole package for an Idol. She has the classically lovely looks, a rocking voice and a charming manner. As Simon put it last night on Idol, "Some people have got it and I think you may have it." Ashley seemed genuinely touched by Simon's gracious compliment and she was voted through to Hollywood by all four of the judges. Kara thought she was the best they had seen so far in Boston.

American Idol Boston Top Five List #2

Justin Williams has an incredible voice. Not only that but he is amazingly good looking and a cancer survivor but the guy has a great set of pipes. He sang "Feelin' Good" and the ladies just loved it. You know that the ladies of the American Idol audience are going to love him too.

American Idol Boston Top Five List #3

How could you not just love Maddy Curtis? I mean, even Simon seemed to be un-annoyed with her. The 16 year-old is one of twelve children, including three brothers with Down Syndrome, and she sang "Hallelujah" just beautifully. This wholesome, all-American, red haired, loving teenager just steals your heart. She's definitely a contender this year.

American Idol Boston Top Five List #4

Two broken wrists from falling out of a tree did not stop Tyler Grady from wowing the judges last night on American Idol. He also wowed me. Tyler crooned out a very sexy "Let's Get it On" version that had the female judges fanning themselves by the time he was done. Even Simon seemed to like the young man and said he would remember him.

American Idol Boston Top Five List #5

I will round out the top five from Boston with 16 year old Katie Stevens. Katie sand "At Last" and she did a wonderful job with the song and she has a great voice. Katie's backstory is around her grandmother, that she sings to at home, that has Alzheimer's. Katie wants to win Idol while her grandmother still has the mental capacityto know who she is.

Those are my top five from the night. A decent night for American Idol overall. Victoria Beckham was just forgettable, Simon was tolerable, Kara was gracious and Randy - well, he was just Randy. Let's see how the Boston folks do in Hollywood.
