In fact, as Siobhan Magnus was ready to take the stage, it seemed like it was going to be a very hard decision to pick who might be going home this week. Up to that point, Crystal Bowersox had probably the weakest performance of the night, though it was by no means terrible. The pressure on Magnus must have been immense.
Despite what the judges said, Magnus had the terrible performance of the night. She tried "Any Man of Mine," Twain's very first number one hit. Twain advised her to sing it with attitude, but Magnus failed to provide any of that until the very end when she was able to unleash her scream. The arrangement seemed out of sorts and even candid shots of Twain in the audience showed she seemed uncertain of when to clap along to the song. The judges gave her glowing reviews, but I think the'll regret that if they watch the performance back later.
However, the rest of the contestants did very well, with the guys, surprisingly perhaps, having some of the best performances of the night.
First among them was Casey James, who admitted to host Ryan Seacrest that he might have turned in a bit of a lazy performance last week. After performing a subdued version of "Don't," which sounded like it could have been coming off the radio right then, judge Simon Cowell said James may have needed the wakeup call of last week. James agreed. For the first time, James actually just sat on a stool and sang a song, instead of trying to impress everyone with his guitar playing. It was a beautiful job.
Lee DeWyze was next best, singing "You're Still the One." Again, his version sounded like something you'd hear on the radio. It was the perfect song choice for him.
Mike Lynche sang "It Only Hurts When I Breathe" while Aaron Kelly sang "You Got A Way." Both turned in very impressive performances.
For all the talk at the beginning of the season about how the talent was with the women this year and it seemed like a woman's year to win "Idol," it should be pointed out of the last six contestants standing, four are men.
After the results are in, only Bowersox, who sang "No One Needs to Know" and said it was a message to her boyfriend, will remain of the women contestants.
However, she may yet prove them right that a woman is set to win it this year.
