Season 9: The Top 9 Sing the Songs of Lennon & McCartney Across the Universe

Rik Merchant
Tuesday, April 6, 2010. Tonight, the Top 9 sang the songs of ex-Beatles the late John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney- Lennon & McCartney- on American Idol 2010 Season 9. There was no mentor except that McCartney said a few encouraging words on video. The host is Ryan Seacrest. The judges are Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi, and Simon Cowell.

The top 9 performed, in this order-

American Idol's Aaron Kelly had his only bad performance since he made the Top 20 with 'The Long and Winding Road'. He was pitchy and boring. Randy said the song should have been changed up. Kara said we keep seeing 'the same side of you'. She suggested he do something up-tempo next time. Neither Ellen nor Simon liked the performance.

American Idol's Katie Stevens looked as if she would sing a bouncy Beatles number dressed in her short hot-pink slim dress. Instead, she sang the heavy 'Let It Be'. She did a great job but lacked je ne sais quoi. Still, she has come a very long way since Miley Cyrus instilled her with confidence two weeks ago. And the judges unanimously loved her performance. Randy called it the best ever and said her vocals were hot. Ellen said Katie was amazing and there was no way she would be in the bottom three this week. Kara said Katie was blossoming on stage. Simon told her, "You did it right." Then the battle between Simon and Kara resumed, for yet another week, when Simon suggested there was some country in there, which is the direction that he thinks Katie should go in. Kara thinks Katie should sing pop. But there was indeed a country twinge in Katie's performance tonight.

American Idol's Andrew Garcia played the guitar as he sang 'Can't Buy Me Love'. He changed up the song. But it was disappointing. Yet, as Randy said, the performance was solid. Ellen said, "First of all, you can't buy love." (Laugh). She thought although Andrew had changed the song dramatically, which could have been considered as disrespectful to the composers, she found his version incredible. Kara loved his guitar break-down. Simon thought it was like the guitarist at a wedding singing a song while the lead singer took a break.

American Idol's Michael 'Big Mike' Lynche sang the heck out of 'Eleanor Rigby' and added great drama to a great performance. Randy was not 100% favorable toward it but he did say Big Mike is a blossoming artist. He stated, "You can do whatever you want." Ellen thought he'd changed the song drastically but she loved it. Kara said Big Mike's vocals were on fire- amazing- and with drama. Simon thought the performance belonged in a musical and said it was too over the top.

American Idol's amazing Crystal 'Mommasox' Bowersox, a sweetheart with unbelievable talent, chose a song not for its lyrics as she usually does but for its 'fun groove'. Accompanied by a musician on the Australian didgeridoo- a super-sized cylindrical wind instrument, like a six-foot drone pipe- Crystal played her guitar as she grooved to 'Come Together'. I would buy an album of hers based just on this one song. Randy had to wait for the deafening applause to subside before he could tell Crystal that this was a solid performance. Ellen said her only worry was how to find yet another different way to tell Crystal 'how great you are'. Kara said the performance was her favorite of Crystal's and said she heard some Bonnie Raitt. She called it slinky and sexy, and smiling. Simon said, "I could hear that on the radio. It worked. Terrific."

American Idol's only Jedi, Tim Urban, sang what Ellen called the perfect song choice for him, 'All My Loving'. Randy told Tim that he's in his own category and it was a great 'Tim' performance. Ellen said it was his best, second only to his 'Hallelujah'. She added, "Girls go crazy over you. You did very well." Kara agreed. Simon said he was not going to base his judgement on a 'Tim' performance but on the performance as to how it fit with American Idol and the other contestants. And in that light, Simon said, "You did really well tonight." He admired how Tim had taken all past criticisms like a man rather than 'whining and whinging' (Simon's word). Simon also said, "I'm proud of you." Tim responded sincerely, "I really appreciate what you all Beatles hair tonight, too.

American Idol's tall hunk- Goldilocks as Simon called him- Casey James played a sweet acoustic guitar as he sang 'Jealous Guy' with feeling. Randy called his performance pitchy but heartfelt. Ellen said it was his best to date. Kara liked his vulnerability. Simon said it was the best performance of the night. I disagree. Crystal's was the best. And I have to say, Tim's was the second best, so far.

American Idol's unpredictable artiste Siobhan Magnus wowed the crowd with her glorious 'Across the Universe'. Referring to her singing and the way she dresses, Randy said, "You scream artist to me." He said he's always wondering 'what you're gonna do next'. He added, "I love you and the artistry in you." He thought the song was a little sleepy for him but couldn't fault it. Ellen told Siobhan that she's really special and really talented. Of the performance, she said, "I loved it- beautiful- good job." Kara loved the singing but was confused by who Siobhan is as an artist. But Simon loves her unpredictability.

The last performance of the night was by American Idol's Lee DeWyze. with 'Hey Jude', accompanied by a bagpiper, who Ellen said 'got separated from his parade'. The piper played as he strode down the stairs and then came to a standstill a few yards to Lee's left. Randy liked Lee's performance- even though he thought the piper distracting. Ellen said, "Great job. I loved it." Kara liked it. Simon said the piper had 'turned up on the wrong show'.

The votes are in for the night. Wednesday tomorrow night will yield the elimination results. The singer is in the most trouble after tonight's performances is Aaron Kelly. I predict that he will end up in the bottom three, along with Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens.
