American Idol: David Archuleta Doesn't Shine on Neil Diamond Night

David Archuleta Too Young for His Song Choices

Demetria Dixon
David Archuleta was completely out of his depth last night. Perhaps, like David Cook, he should have chosen lesser know songs. As it was, he chose two of Neil Diamond's signature songs, "Sweet Caroline" and "Coming to America". The effect was sort of like when a young boy goes into his father's closet and puts on his clothes. He doesn't have the body to fill them out so they swallow him up.

David Cook was completely swallowed up by the legacy of those songs. Rather than complement his voice, they highlight the immaturity of his voice. I know all the judges gushed over him, but based on Paula's behavior, the judges may not have been at the top of their game last night. She said she mixed up David Cook and Jason Castro. While not remotely understandable it didn't matter since neither of them had sung twice.

Obviously this music is not relevant to the majority of these contestants. I'm not saying he didn't do his level best to give a good performance. However, the whole thing was a bust for me. I felt like I was watching a kid at a talent show; a really talented kid, but a kid, nonetheless. David Archuleta has a beautiful voice and he has delivered some awe-inspiring performances. His rendition of "Angels" was a show stopper. On some compositions his vocals shine like new money but on other's the depth of his youth is evident in his vocal delivery. Some hold Archuleta up to comparisons with last year's winner, Jordin Sparks. Sparks was only 17 when she won the Idol title but her voice transcended her age. Once should also note that Jordin's sales have not been as brisk as Idol and J Records would like them to be.

David A is considered a front runner in this competition, but as I've said before, he needs a little more seasoning before he's ready. At this point, I don't know that his popularity will translate into record sales. Of course I could be way off the mark here. His popularity with the teen and tween set could catapult him into the stratospheric realms of success akin to Miley Cyrus.

It seems a forgone conclusion the David A is through to next week. I hope he makes song choices that allow him to shine instead of songs that shine a light on immaturity of his voice.

I didn't think you were being snippy. The snippy people know who they are. I am glad that we're talking about it. It would be phenomenal if we could address other more profound issues with the same gusto. I am just as guilty as a lot of other people of putting a lot of emotion behind things that are just a teeny weeny bit frivolous. I love American Idol but it is a TV show. I enjoy blogging about it immensely and weighing in with my perspective but it still is a TV show.

Dear Demetria: Well, it appears that you (and I, to an extent) have really opened a Pandora's Box of commentary on David Archuleta. I was the first to say I disagreed, but, having said that I disagreed with you on one point, I did agree with your assessment of Syesha Mercado, and I hope my comments were not "snippy." I merely wanted to weigh in with a different opinion, not "bash" the message-bearer. I was a film and book critic for a Pulitzer-owned newspaper for 12 years and there is a difference between disagreeing, politely, and just bashing someone who disagrees with you. The important thing to remember, Demetria, is that you have people talking about it, anyway. Now, if we could only see as much enthusiasm for the political issues facing our country, rather than the side-show stuff that makes the news, we'd be on to something. (Can you work on that?...lol)

First of all thank you all for your comments, I appreciate it. Second of all, there is no need to get snippy but it's cool. Nothing like a litle controversy to get the ire up and the juices flowing. I admit I am an armchair quarterback who is judging solely based on my opinion. I said what I thought. I was in no way mean spirited. So for those of you who are overly angry about this thing, I think you need to check yourselves. I am, however, glad to have you commenting even if you are shooting me down and wounding me with your low ratings. Anyway keep the comments coming, I love it.

Demetria, better stick to your desinger/selling foods occupation. Obviously you are no musical genius so your comments are not really all that valid. Just another opinion from someone that seems to still try to find her niche? What are YOUR TALENTS again?
David Archuleta is the WINNER already in my opinion. By the way, can you sing? never heard of you before and isn't Demetria a Greek name? Obviously not a Greek Goddess either...We are all voting for David A all the way baby. He is the real talent this year. At least we don't have to listen to shouting music when David Cook gets eliminated before David A..........

BLA BLA BLA nonsense opinions from talentless commentators. David Archuleta is the VOICE and Talent to Beat this year. Natasha thinks he is amazing and she knows she is an incredible singer and performer. She says he is going to WIN this year. We all think he is amazing. Let's see your talents on the stage weekly. BRING IT ON???

Demetria, not sure what performances and show you were watching, but Archuleta had an AWESOME night during Neil Diamond. He is the CLEAR winner this year. After all, Natasha ( a professional and successful singer admitted that on national TV that he is the clear winner this year) and believe me I value HER opinion more than yours. Get off the anti-band wagon of David ARchuleta. This young man is AMAZING. He has a lot to teach of all us. If you do not think he is talented, why not try getting on stage on LIVE TV and be judged by millions. You could not make it probably through the auditions, never mind talent...And no I am not a teen either, but a single Mom in her 30s. VOTE VOTE VOTE DAVID ARCHULETA (at least he is not full of himself like David Cook)

I also disagree regarding David Archuleta's performance being not up to par. He did great - he did two upbeat songs which is a risk for him, and he sounded great. I've got a CD in my car with David's songs and everytime I have someone in the car and it's playing, they're shocked when I say he's 17. "What? Only 17?!" is their reaction. He'll outsell anyone else this season, regardless of whether or not he wins.

David A was fantastic. He was in no way 'out of his depth'--that is just your bias talking.

Hi Everyone, I appreciate all your comments. Connie, I agree that it was a savvy move. I just didn't think it worked vocally. I went to youtube and listened again, just to make sure I wasn't just being biased. I missed the EleanorRigby performance and I havn't listened to it on youtube so I don't know exactly what he did. That's the funny part about David Cook. I usually hate it when people completely change up a song and disregard the melody, but I enjoy it when David Cook does it, go figure. I get your point about Paula. I didn't even think about that. I am glad Syesha made the cut. I would really like to see her come out of her shell and really give a show stopping performance. I listened to Tamyra Gray who was on the first Idol. She was phenomenal. Syesha could give a performance like that if she would just let herself go.

As a big old Neil Diamond fan, the legacy may only exist in my mind.

  • Go Archie!!4/30/2008
