American Idol: David Archuleta Sings "Believe" by Mariah Carey

American Idol Top 7 Perform Tuesday 4/15/08

Tonight the American Idol Top 7 contestants were mentored by Mariah Carey. David Archuleta lead the night off with his version of "Believe", and did not disappoint us.

David Archuleta has that humble 'everyday kid' quality about him that makes it impossible to truly dislike him. David A. has humility and shows it every time he takes the AI stage. He is thankful for any praise and takes critiques like a man, without retorts. He is a very mature young man.

Tonight David opened the show with a song that I am not that familiar with, but then I am not familiar with many Mariah Carey songs. I was not as impressed with this performance as I have been with some of David A.'s previous Idol arrangements.

Don't get me wrong, I love David Archuleta and really hope that he can win American Idol. I have never seen him appear so nervous. This contest must be far more difficult than Star Search was, as he looked much more relaxed on that show (at age 12, he finished second). David sang a rendition of "Climb Every Mountain" that gave me chills (they had to perform in certain genres on that show as well). So I know that David has it in him to be consistent, but he seems very tired.

The judging went down like this:

Randy Jackson - "... you can sing anything... that was the bomb"

Paula Abdul- "Mariah is smiling... you made her proud"

Simon Cowell - " I have to say that you performed that really well"

David Archuleta will most certainly go into the Top 6, and I will forever believe that he will place in the Top 2. If he can get some rest and confidence he will be a great American Idol.

Neat review. I haven't watched much of AI, but I always enjoy reading everyone's reviews of the performances.

I agree--it wasn't my favorite performance from him, but I still like him!

Good review and article. I agree that this young man is exceptional in his performances are "the bomb!" I hope to see a lot more of him in the future.
