American Idol: David Cook's Song Choices for Idol Top 3 Performances

David Cook Sings Songs by Collective Soul and Roberta Flack

The American Idol Top 3 performances are upon us and the cat is out of the bag, at least for David Cook. While appearing on a Fox affiliate in Kansas City, Missouri, Cook announced that he'd chosen "The World I Know" by Collective Soul.

While he was on the air he received a text message from Simon Cowell, indicating that he'd chosen Roberta Flack's, "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" as his choice for David to sing. Both of these songs are great song choices for David Cook. If he is true to form then he should bring something new to each rendition. "The World I Know" is a great song.

I believe it's socially conscious post-grunge feel is in line with Cook's musical sensibilities. With its guitar and string infused melody, it gives David Cook an opportunity to work his magic. It is interesting that Simon would choose the Roberta Flack classic, "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". It is currently a track on Simon find, Leona Lewis' debut album Spirit. I listened to her version on Youtube and found it very beautiful and pitch perfect, but in my best impression of Simon; there really wasn't any new ground covered. Considering David's version of "Billie Jean", I can hardly wait to see what he has planned for the Flack classic.

This thing is down to the nitty gritty, so we'll see tonight who has the chops and who will fold like an overused deck of cards. I predict that David Cook will have his act together and he'll deliver the goods. David Archuleta will be perky and good as always. I believe Syesha Mercado will really deliver the surprises tonight. However to hope to unseat the two David's she will definitely have bring it and some of its friends, too. Of course, up to now she's been as resilient as the notorious "Teflon Don" John Gotti so there's always a chance.

My prediction is for David and David to advance, however, that's not that exciting since we've been expecting that all season. An upset at this point would be great fodder for all of us bloggers and American Idol pundits. So, dare I say it; David Cook versus Syesha for all the marbles. Considering David Archuleta's recent dad troubles, now might be a good time for him to assess whose dreams he's really fulfilling. Whoever makes it through to the finale should be proud. Especially considering the level of talent that was a part of the show.

There's a great deal of talk about American Idol's credibility and if it has what it takes to return for an eighth season. I certainly hope so. As for the judges, I quite enjoy the mix of Simon's snarkiness, Paula's loopiness and Randy's dawginess. So judges if you're up for it, let's make it happen next season.
