Donna Summer seemed to be the favorite pick with the group, with three of the seven choosing selections by her. We also had a couple of Bee Gee hits, something from Earth, Wind & Fire, and Chaka Khan.
Lil Rounds opened the show with a song that should have set her apart from the crowd, but instead it seemed more like a letdown. She did Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman", which should have been a really powerful song for her but she didn't seem to shine like the star we all hoped she would be. It very well could be the end of the line for Lil tonight when two contestants will be sent home.
Kris chose to sing a Donna Summer song, "She Works Hard for the Money". I have to say that out of all of the contestants he made this song more current and relevant than any other contestant last night. He could take his version on that song and record it on an album today and it would be well received. I think Kris will be around for the next round.
Danny sang an old Earth, Wind & Fire number, "September". It is just one of those feel good songs that make you want to get up and dance. He kept that feeling but added his own special flavor to the song, which is strongly encouraged at this stage of the competition. Danny is a great vocalist and I think he had a rock solid performance last night.
Allison was another contestant that chose to perform a Donna Summer song, "Hot Stuff". I don't feel that she did the best she could have with the song. Allison has a strong and unusual voice for someone so young. She definitely can sing, it just wasn't her best performance and with a song like "Hot Stuff" if you are going to sing it, you better bring it.
Adam, where to begin? I don't know if he wants to be Alice Cooper or Elvis Presley. I am pretty tired of his constant bending of the songs. He will force any song into his pattern. I would just once like to see him keep with a theme and actually perform a song in some semblance of its original version. And Simon is so smitten with him, why don't they just get a room. I have never seen another performer that Simon has had nothing but praise for like Adam. Surely he will screw up sooner or later and when he does Simon had better call him on it or he will lose all credibility of being Mr. I don't spare their feelings, I just tell the truth. If Adam is so great, why didn't he make it on his own before when he tried? A one trick pony is only fun for a short while. Oh, and what he did to the Bee Gee's beautiful song "If I Can't Have You" was terrible. He pays no respect to the original artists at all ever.
Matt also performed a Bee Gee's number, "Stayin' Alive". I hate to say it but I knew someone was going to do this song. I had it more pegged on Anoop than Matt. He did ok with such a wordy fast paced song. It's hard to get a song like that cut down into the amount of time they are allowed to perform. He did hit some good notes and I think he will be ok tonight.
Anoop performed Donna Summer's "Dim All the Lights" and it was a pretty good performance. I would have picked something else myself. I like Anoop; he is a homey (I'm from NC too). Did he do enough to keep himself out of the bottom three, probably not? Did he do enough to keep himself from being one of the two to be sent home, let's hope so?
