American Idol 2010 Season 9. Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Since Michael Lynche was saved last week, we still have a Top 9, who sang Elvis Presley songs. Tonight's top performers were Crystal, Tim, Siobhan, and Lee. Katie and Casey were very good. Michael, Andrew, and Aaron are in trouble. The host is Ryan Seacrest. The judges are Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi, and Simon Cowell. And the mentor is the ever-original, unpredictable, fresh and energy-infused glam man, Adam Lambert- the first ex-American Idol contestant to be a mentor. Adam said the Top 9 singers need to 'wake up a little bit'. He is hoping they will infuse their performances with the spirit of Elvis and show energy. Here they are, in order of occurrence-

American Idol's Crystal Bowersox was a thrill playing the electric guitar- Adam's suggestion- and singing 'Saved'. Randy said it was the 'second coming of Bonnie Raitt'. Crystal may be a mix of Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. But ultimately, she is the one and only Crystal Bowersox. Ellen repeated her usual 'how great you are' and added 'fantastic'! Kara said, "Another solid performance." Kara noted the lyrics were controversial for back then (50s? for this Leiber & Mike Stoller )- for example, "I used to drink, I used to smoke. I used to smoke, drink and dance the hoochy-coo." Simon ended his comments with, "Congratulations." Crystal rocked with a gospel-bluesy style. Per Adam's advice, she let down her dreadlocks tonight- her hair and her music!

American Idol's Andrew Garcia coddled the microphone stand- very distracting- as he sang a slow version of 'Hound Dog' even though Adam had advised him to speed it up. When Andrew did so in the mentor meeting, he sounded great. As Adam said, "Elvis is a showman." But for the stage performance, Andrew didn't pull it off. As Randy said- it was 'not good, it was karaoke'. Ellen said Andrew should have added more swagger. Kara said he wasn't a star. Simon said the performance was lazy and like the part of a musical that no one wants to see.

American Idol's only Jedi knight Tim Urban played the guitar and sang 'Can't Help Falling in Love'- which is the song that Adam said he would have chosen if he had been singing in the competition tonight. Randy liked Tim's performance. Ellen said that getting used to liking Tim was like getting used to drinking tequila, one glass at a time. She said, "I can't help falling in love with you." Kara said the performance was her favorite 'Tim' one. Simon said Tim had gone from zero to hero in two weeks- it's been three weeks for you, Simon. The tweens- and young women- always see their Jedi knight Tim Urban as a hero! Simon even meted out one of his rare "Congratulations." Yes- 'the force is strong with this one'.

American Idol's Lee DeWyze played the guitar and sang 'A Little Less Conversation'. Finally, he has shown emotion in his face and in his singing- thanks to mentor Adam who advised him to liven up. Randy said the performance was good. Ellen loved it. Kara said Lee's vocals were on fire but Lee needed to be more playful. Simon said Lee had 'nailed it'.

American Idol's teen Aaron Kelly did not convince me to not step on his 'Blue Suede Shoes'. Randy didn't like the first half of the performance but said the second half was better. Ellen gave Aaron and 'A' for effort. Kara liked the performance. Simon said it was like being at a 'high school concert, which isn't a bad thing'. But then he gave it the kiss of death- he called it karaoke.

The judges have been really aggravating for the past two weeks when it comes to Siobhan Magnus. She is wildly creative and talented. But at least only two picked on her tonight. She is a thrilling performer- almost as thrilling as Adam Lambert, whom she sat next to in the audience for a few moments before performing. They are a great-looking pair. Especially tonight, each with a modernized Elvis pompadour- with Siobhan's looking quite feminine, of course!

Wearing a short white dress that's a spinoff of Elvis's white costume, American Idol's beauty Siobhan knocked my socks off with a very entertaining rendition of 'Suspicious Minds'. Randy said, "That girl can sing- right there." Ellen called the performance 'beautiful' and said, "I really liked it a lot." Kara said she wasn't crazy about it. She found herself confused. Simon said the performance was erratic and screechy. Siobahn responded to Kara by saying that she's not 'one kind of singer' and she doesn't need to be defined by anyone. Way to go, Siobhan!

American Idol's big man Michael Lynche sang 'In the Ghetto'. He did not take Adam's advice and tell a story. A singer needs to grasp each word and mean it- the way Elvis Presley did, the way Adam Lambert does. But Randy called the vocals hot. Ellen said, "I'm glad we saved you." Kara like the performance. Simon said it was one of his favorites.

Clad in a short black dress reminiscent of Elvis's black costume, American Idol's Katie Stevens sang 'Baby, What Do You Want Me to Do?', a frustrated angry song to show how she felt about the judges' individual diverse weekly advice about what kind of artist she should be. Randy said the vocals were nice and that he was entertained. Ellen said it was 'very horny'. As the audience laughed, she said she meant there were a lot of horns (horn players). Does Ellen have the hots for Katie? Kara liked the performance. Simon said it was loud and angry. And he didn't like the song.

American Idol's blond hunk Casey James played guitar as he sang 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy'. Randy told him he was in the zone and bluesy. He said the performance was 'nothing different' but it was solid. Ellen said it was not exciting per se but 'you're always good'. Kara said it fell short. Simon said it was a wasted opportunity. The golden boy needs to put down the guitar for a song or two and really just sing- feeling each word and singing its nuance.

The votes are in for the night. Wednesday night will yield the elimination results. Out of six guys and three girls, the two singers in the most trouble after tonight's performances are Andrew Garcia and Michael Lynche. They and Aaron Kelly will land in the bottom three. My prediction: Andrew and Michael will be going home.
